REAL LIFE SITUATION
AFFIRMATIVE ACTION IN COLLEGE ADMISSIONS
COLLEGES SHOW PREFERENCE TO CERTAIN MINORITY GROUPS
TREATMENT OF MAJORITY VS. MINORITY GROUPS
LIMITS ON OUR KNOWLEDGE
• CAN ONLY GUESS THE IMPACT POLITICAL CORRECTNESS/ AFFIRMATIVE ACTION HAS HAD ON MINORITIES/ MAJORITIES

• CANT DEFINITELY SAY HOW EFFECTIVE POLITICAL CORRECTNESS IS

• CAN'T SPEAK FOR ALL MEMBERS OF THE MINORITY/MAJORITY

• ONLY ACCOUNTING FOR A VERY SPECIFIC GROUP OF PEOPLE
• LANGUAGE: HOW IS IT USED IN POLITICAL CORRECTNESS AND HOW DOES THAT RELATE TO THE TREATMENT OF MAJORITY/MINORITY GROUPS?

• EMOTION: WHAT ROLE DOES EMOTION PLAY IN THE MOTIVATIONS BEHIND POLITICAL CORRECTNESS?
ASSUMPTIONS IN THE KNOWLEDGE ISSUE
POLITICAL CORRECTNESS DOES EFFECT THE MINORITY AND MAJORITY GROUPS

POLITICAL CORRECTNESS --> AFFIRMATIVE ACTION
LANGUAGE, CONT.
COUNTERCLAIM:
POLITICALLY CORRECT LANGUAGE = IGNORANCE?

EQUAL OPPORTUNITY --> QUOTAS
HOW DOES THIS AFFECT THE MINORITY?
POLITICAL CORRECTNESS --> AFFIRMATIVE ACTION --> MINORITIES
WAY OF KNOWING #1 - LANGUAGE
CLAIM: LANGUAGE IS THE PRIMARY MEHTOD THROUGH WHICH WE COMMUNICATE POLITICAL CORRECTNESS

LANGUAGE USED TO DESCRIBE THE ORIGINAL INTENT OF AFFIRMATIVE ACTION IN THE 1960'S

PRESIDENT JOHN F. KENNEDY SAID GOVERNMENT EMPLOYERS SHOULD "NOT DISCRIMINATE AGAINST ANY EMPLOYEE OR APPLICANT FOR EMPLOYMENT BECAUSE OF RACE, CREED, COLOR, OR NATIONAL ORIGIN" AND "TAKE AFFIRMATIVE ACTION TO ENSURE THAT APPLICANTS ARE EMPLOYED, AND THAT EMPLOYEES ARE TREATED DURING EMPLOYMENT, WITHOUT REGARD TO THEIR RACE, CREED, COLOR, OR NATIONAL ORIGIN.”
WAY OF KNOWING #2 - EMOTION
CLAIM: EMOTION IS USED TO SYMPATHIZE. POLITICAL CORRECTNESS = EQUALITY = PATHOS BETWEEN MAJORITY AND MINORITY

COLLEGES WANT TO ESTABLISH PATHOS BY CREATING EQUAL OPPORTUNITY
EMOTION, CONT.
COUNTERCLAIM: EMOTION CAUSES FEAR. IF YOU ARE NOT COMPLETELY POLITICALLY CORRECT, YOU ARE ACCUSED OF DISCRIMINATION.

PEOPLE PROTEST AFFIRMATIVE ACTION (EQUAL OPPORTUNITY) BECAUSE IT GIVES TOO MUCH PREFERENCE TO MINORITIES --> DISCRIMINATION AGAINST MAJORITY
EXAMPLE: AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENTS AT HARVARD FACE DISCRIMINATION

LANGUAGE --> EMOTION --> NEED FOR POLITICAL CORRECTNESS
HOW DOES THIS AFFECT THE MAJORITY?
LESS CHANCE OF BEING ADMITTED TO COLLEGE
EXTREME POLITICAL LANGUAGE (SOMETIMES UNNECESSARY)
EXAMPLE: CHRISTMAS/HOLIDAY TREE
IN CONCLUSION:
Using language and emotion,
POLITICAL CORRECTNESS
leads to
AFFIRMATIVE ACTION IN COLLEGE ADMISSIONS
which leads to
DIFFERENT TREATMENTS OF MINORITY AND MAJORITY GROUPS
