Countee Cullen History Countee Cullen Literary Analysis "From the Dark Tower" We shall not always plant while others reap
The golden increment of bursting fruit,
Not always countenance, abject and mute,
That lesser men should hold their brothers cheap;
Not everlastingly while others sleep
Shall we beguile their limbs with mellow flute,
Not always bend to some more subtle brute;
We were not made to eternally weep.
The night whose sable breast relieves the stark,
White stars is no less lovely being dark,
And there are buds that cannot bloom at all
In light, but crumple, piteous, and fall;
So in the dark we hide the heart that bleeds,
And wait, and tend out agonizing seeds. buttble Diction and Syntax The poem is a fourteen-line poem that is divided into two sections. Cullen uses a choice of words with negative connotations to describe the feelings of the African-Americans during this time period, as shown: "Not always countenance, abject and mute" (3).
"In light, but crumple, piteous, and fall" (12). It utilizes a variety of vocabulary that does not make the poem seem overly boring.

He was born on March 30, 1903. Cullen's birthplace is unknown; many accounts say Louisville, Kentucky, but others say New York City. Countee Cullen was adopted. His original name was Countee Porter. He was adopted by Carolyn Belle (Mitchell) Cullen and Reverend Frederick A. Cullen. Harvard Countee Cullen attended DeWitt Clinton High school then going to New York City University. He then earned a Masters Degrees in English and French. "We shall not always plant while others reap / The golden increment of bursting fruit" (1-2). The two lines could be analyzed where the author stands for the African-Americans working hard in slavery as the white community would work them to the bone. ARE New York University DeWitt Clinton High School He became a French teacher at Frederick Douglas Junior High. Before Cullen, there were only two other African-American poet writers that took their writing as seriously as he did. He had won more major literary prizes then any other poet in the 1920's. He was one of the most popular black literary figures in America. He wrote numerous books and poems. On January 9, 1946, Countee Cullen passed away from high blood pressure Imagery Cullen uses literary devices to create vivid imagery of how African-Americans were treated or felt. "The night whose sable breast relieves stark, / White stars is no less lovely being dark" (9-10). The night is personified, given its "sable breast" that is interpreted to be the sky or the African-Americans. The "white stars" that are no less lovely being dark refers to how the stars cannot be beautiful without the contrast of the dark sky. Presented by:
Anita Wu Cullen also utilizes many metaphors when reading in a more in-depth analysis. His metaphors are not easily seen because they are not simply stated as a comparison. Other Details Message The poem consists of fourteen lines that is split into an eight-line stanza and six-line stanza. The eight-line stanza (octave) talks about the discrimination that the African-Americans felt at the time. The six-line stanza (sestet) encourages the readers of the poem to stand strong and have hope while waiting patiently. The octave has a rhyme pattern of "abba".
