JUDGMENT!
The Prophets are Like a conversation Between:
1) A Father and an Extremely Rebellious Son
"Children have I reared and brought up, but they have rebelled against me." (Isaiah 1:2)
2) A Husband Walking in on His Cheating Wife
"How the faithful city has become a whore, she who was full of justice." (Isaiah 1:21)
Yahweh's 2 Main Complaints in the Prophets:
1) Lack of Justice
2) Lack of Loyalty to Yahweh
"Even though you make many prayers I will not listen; your hands are full of blood. Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your deeds from before my eyes; cease to do eveil. learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow's cause. (Isa 1:16-17)
"For you have rejected your people, the house of Jacob, because they are full of things from the east and of fortune-tellers like the Philistines, and they strike hands with the children of foreigners." (Isaiah 2:6)

Matthew

Luke
John
Likeliest Author
Matthew the tax collector turned apostle
John Mark, a disciple of the apostles, recounting Peter's words
Luke, a physician well known by the apostles who collected and compiled materials for "Theophilus"
John, one of Jesus' closest friends and apostles
Themes from the past
Jesus is the new prophet like Moses
(Deut 18)
Jesus is the predicted "Son of God" from 2 Samuel 7 and his coming is nothing short of the coming of "The LORD" predicted at the beginning of the comfort section of Isaiah (Is 40:3)
John the baptist is to King Jesus what Samuel was to King David.
Jesus brings about the year of the Lord's favor on the poor and outcast, like the year of Jubilee (Lev 25)
Jesus was "the word" who created "In the beginning" and now gives new birth through his spirit that is breathed out by him.
Theme
Jesus is the Messiah who brings God's kingdom to earth in an unexpected way
Jesus performs miracles that prove to a select few that he has authority over all things
Jesus provides a "great reversal" by helping the outsiders and humbling the prideful
A handful of signs that point to Jesus as the author of new life.
Audience
Jews
Non-Jewish Christians
Theophilus and early Christians
Ephesus and the rest of the Greco-roman world
Turning Point to Jerusalem
Peter Confesses "You are the Christ", then Jesus heads to Jerusalem
Peter's Confession
Peter's Confession
Jesus repeatedly says "my hour has not come", then Mary anoints his feet with perfume for burial, then Jesus' heads into Jerusalem

1 Thessalonians
2 Thessalonians

"I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith,[e] as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.” Romans 1:16-17
1-3 - Gentiles & Jews both have sin & need grace
4-8 - We died to law through Christ and live by his spirit
9-11 - What about Israel?
12-16 - Walk in love together as Jesus' people
Romans:
"You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” -Acts 1:8
ETC
Ch 1-2: Jesus > angels

Ch 3: Jesus > Moses

Ch 4: Jesus > Rest/Promised land

Ch 4-8: Jesus > High priest

Ch 9-10: Jesus > Moses' Covenant
& Temple/Tent

Ch 11-13: Jesus > Lives of Faith Pre-Jesus

Conclusion: Be strengthened by Jesus, Moses is no longer a valid option

Jesus' message is more binding

People didn't beleive Moses as a negative example

Rest isn't reached without a faith-filled struggle

You [Hebrews] are becoming dull of hearing (going back to Judaism)

Worse judgment for neglecting Jesus

You have need of enduring, if one shrinks back, God has no pleasure

Without faith you cannot please God, don't go the way of Esau

You have forgotten God's fatherly heart

Does mean:

Enduring in righteousness as you hear about Jesus' coming victory over mysterious evil
Take Revelation to Heart!
What is the purpose to our story?
Some say it’s to “give God glory”
But what does that mean?
Simply to pray and to sing?
What does it mean for everything?
Not just people, but other beings?
Can pets glorify God too?
God told animals what to do
“Have lots of kids to fill the earth”
You bring glory by giving birth

Lets start with the sun in the sky
How does God make THAT glorify?
God said, “Rule over the day,
you glorify me that way”
The sun doesn’t sing or pray
It gives God glory another way
How do people bring God glory?
That’s the best part of this story
“Let’s make people look like us”
God and God and God discussed
God exists as three in one
He said “US” to Spirit and Son
But if you know the story well
You know that these humans fell
They didn’t obey God’s command
But there was a rescue plan
Multiply and fill the earth
Spread my joy by giving birth
Humankind will glorify
When you rule and multiply
God told them to subdue and rule
Fight the serpent who tries to fool
Build and bless the untamed wild
Rule the earth as my blessed child
Guys and girls both display
What God is like in different ways
Just like God is one and three
Marriage shows God’s unity
Then I’ll bring my rescue plan
I’ll save you through a chosen man
Abraham’s kids became Israel
It seemed like God’s promise failed
Egypt had made these people slaves
But God showed his power to save
But Israel didn’t believe
They did things that made God grieve
Moses told them they were frauds
They will worship other gods
Until God sends them back as slaves
They won’t learn or be behaved
Bigger blessings are on their way
When they repent to serve Yahweh
Choose Life or Death
Your Rebellious Heart Needs Work
The Boot Is Coming
Yahweh Will Still Bless
Curses for Disobedience
Through the years Moses was right
Rebellion marked the Israelites
God reasoned through the prophets
But their words couldn’t stop it
Israel went out as exiles
Until they changed their lifestyles
Now the time was very near
For God’s blessings to appear

God brought his kingdom to earth
King Jesus was given birth
He showed how righteous rulers rule
He never was selfish or cruel
He always put others first
Even when they did their worst
They crucified their greatest king
But he returned and broke death’s sting

Now Jesus rules through his church
When for righteousness we search
When we resist the serpent’s schemes
And work to show how Christ redeems
We multiply by sharing our king
We spread his joy through discipling
Humankind will glorify
When we rule and multiply

One day there will be perfect peace
Christ will judge and sin will cease
We will rule in righteousness
With Christ’s heart to build and bless

Blessed
