Circulatory System Function: Takes blood containing oxygen and nutrients to the cells, carries waste products away from cells, helps to regulate body temperature.

Structures: Heart, blood, blood vessels (arteries, veins, capillaries)

Common disorders: Hypertension, arteriosclerosis, angina pectoris, myocardial infarction (MI), congestive heart failure (CHF) Respiratory System Function: Controls breathing (brings in oxygen, eliminates CO2)

Structures: Nose, mouth, pharynx, trachea, larynx, bronchi, lungs

Common disorders: Upper respiratory infections (URI), pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD - chronic bronchitis, emphysema, asthma), lung cancer, tuberculosis Nervous System
The "Master System" Function: Controls and coordinates all functions of the body

Structures: Two main parts -
Central Nervous System: Brain and spinal cord
Peripheral Nervous System: Cranial nerves, spinal nerves
Sensory organs, autonomic nervous system

Common disorders: Stroke, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, hearing and vision problems Gastrointestinal System Function: Breaks down food so it can be absorbed by the bloodstream and circulated to body cells, removes waste products from the digestive process

Structures: Mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine

Common disorders: Cancers, inflammations, ulcers, hernias, cirrhosis Urinary System Function: Excretes urine, maintains water balance within the body, controls blood chemistry

Structures: Kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, urethra

Common disorders: Incontinence, retention, urinary tract infections (UTI), cyctitis, renal calculi, nephritis Endocrine System Function: Hormones regulate body functions such as growth and development, metabolism, and reproduction.

Structures: Pituitary gland, thyroid gland, adrenal glands, gonads, pancreas

Common disorders: Thyroid disorders (hyper&hypo, goiter), pancreatic disorders (diabetes) Functions, Structures, and Common Disorders Body Systems Integumentary System Functions: Protects inside of body against injury and disease, regulates body temperature, stores fats and vitamins for energy, receives information from the environment, excretes through sweat

Structures: Skin, hair, nails, oil and sweat glands

Common disorders: Skin lesions, decubitus ulcers, burns Reproductive System Functions: Produce reproductive cells, secrete hormones that cause the development of sex characteristics.

Structures:
Male: Testes, scrotum, penis, prostate gland
Female: Ovaries, uterus, fallopian tubes, vagina

Common disorders: Cancers, prostrate disorders, menstrual irregularities, STIs Musculoskeletal System Functions: Provides a framework for the body, allows body to move, protects the body, gives it shape

Structures: Muscles, bones, connective tissue

Common disorders: Bursitis, arthritis, fractures, contractures
