Transcript of Designer Babies
OUR BUSINESS IS LIFE ITSELF
"We'll take the boy in the Greek-model, but can you make him 6-foot-4 instead of 6 feet? And gimme the green eyes instead of the blue; ash-blond hair --a little curly, but not too much; olive complexion; 140 IQ; heavy on the fast-twitch muscles."
-Clay Farris Naff, Designer babies
"A designer baby is a baby whose genetic makeup has been selected in order to eradicate a particular defect, or to ensure that a particular gene is present."

"Some people think it will open up a Pandora's Box of 'designer babies', but it doesn't have to be that way. Perhaps as a society we can decide where to draw the line."
- Sarah Fecht, Genetic Literacy Project
All designer babies are made through in-vitro fertilization (IVF)
Many eggs from the mother are fertilized outside of the body
Each embryo is put through pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PDG)
The healthy embryos are then implanted into the mother and then will grow in the uterus
New technology released in 2013 that makes editing DNA cheaper and more precise
Allows for more possibilities for each child created
The Catechism of the Catholic Church say about designer babies:
"They dissociate the sexual act from the procreative act. The act which brings the child into existence is no longer an act by which two persons give themselves to one another, but one that “entrusts the life and identity of the embryo into the power of doctors and biologists and establishes the domination of technology over the origin and destiny of the human person." (C.C.C. 2377)
"A child is not something owed to one, but is a gift" (C.C.C. 2378)
-Do you agree with the concept of designer babies?
-Do you think one day this will become a reality, and that we will create a world like Aldous Huxley's
Brave New World
-Do you think that we could create a "master race"?
-Should designer babies be illegal?
• The idea that the parents are not accepting
their child the way it is naturally born
• Could potentially cause emotional harm to the child
• Contradicts the idea of individuality
• The technology is not perfect, which may pose
both short-term and long-term problems
• It could potentially cause a new prejudice those
with inferior genetic makeup

"We are not creating designer babies. We are not trying to choose eye or hair colour. We are trying to prevent an illness."
Is Harper Beckham a designer baby?
Are designer babies purely created for aesthetic purposes?
Not natural, all science
Role playing God
The end does not justify the means
Hurt one and save the other?
Slippery Slope of Morality
1. Started as
2. Starts to slide
3. It kept sliding
4. We thought it slid all the way
5. It keeps sliding
