Basketball in the 1960's
By: Fiona Marolly

FONTS
History
The roots of basketball are firmly embedded in Canada. In 1891 the game was invented by Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian who hailed from Almonte, Ontario.
Having been given the task of creating a new indoor sports activity while conducting a physical education class at the international YMCA training school in Springfield, Massachusetts, Naismith designed what we now call basketball. The original game involved 13 rules and a peach basket hung ten feet above the floor. Even though it took place in the United States, at least ten of the players who participated in the first-ever game were university students from Quebec.

Why I chose basketball?

I chose basketball because it is my number one favorite sport. I have been playing for eight years now and I am hoping that one day I will achieve my goal to become a WNBA basketball player.

Almost my whole life revolves around basketball. My inspiration is my father. He is the one that taught me everything that I need to know about basketball. He is the reason why I am so determined to be a basketball player.

Uniforms
Basketball uniforms were revolutionized in the 1960s. Synthetic fabrics were becoming commonplace, lighter and less prone to getting sweat-soaked and clammy than cotton. This was the beginning point for proper basketball jerseys. The shorts were greatly improved, as well; still quite short, but elastic waistbands made a great alternative to those stiff nylon belts. Shoes had also come a long way. They still had little in the way of cushioning or foot-bed support, but the first high-tops helped to stabilize players’ ankles and prevent injury.
