(Magazine) Greenwald, Andy. "Gerard Way meets Iggy Pop: with his wild onstage antics and upcoming 'Sleazy Detroit Rock' album, my chemical romance's frontman is a true disciple of the stooges. 'I didn't want the girls to want to F--K me, I wanted the straight guys to want to F--K me,' way says. 'I got that from Iggy.'." SPIN Magazine Apr. 2010: 72+. General OneFile. Frank Iero Ray Toro Mikey Way Biography Graff, Gary. "My Chemical Romance: Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys." Billboard 20 Nov. 2010: 34. General OneFile. Web. 6 Dec. 2010. Bob Bryar The beginning of the band all started in little Newark, New Jersey as the band members became loose friends in High-School. They went on their own ways, not knowing that later they would come to form the greatly successful band My Chemical Romance. As he was working on animation in New York, Gerard Way started questioning what he was doing with his life, and soon proposed to his friend Mike Pellesier that they should write music. In the early 2000's they wrote their first song “Skylines and Turnstiles” They found the music to their liking and decided to start a real band. Later they came together with Gerard's younger brother Mikey Way, Frank Iero, and Ray Toro. They decided on the band name My Chemical Romance, on Mikey's suggestion, which originates from an Irving Welsh novel. Soon they said good-bye to Pellesier and said hello to Bob Bryar, and started touring with The Black Parade.
They say that they grew up in strange households which gave way to their strange behavior. They do have quite a bit of strange behavior, as Gerard tries to pave the way for new pop/rock artists. He says he likes things that are edgy, things that no one would expect. Gerard says that he likes to challenge sexuality, he wants to blow away all boundaries. His music has to almost scare the audience, it has to have everything normal society deems 'dirty'. “More sex. More Danger. More Explosions. Right now.” He comments during an interview with Iggy Pop and SPIN Magazine. He wants to do the unexpected, even if it's something normal. He makes a comment that when they expect something normal, he'll go all out crazy. When they're expecting something outrageous, he'll go home to his wife and take care of his son, changing diapers. He wants people to question themselves, he wants people to question everything, maybe even their sexuality. Says Gerard during the same interview, “I wanted to challenge gender, abuse the audience. I didn't want the girls to want to f*** me, I wanted the straight guys to want to f*** me. I think I got that from Iggy.” It's obvious that Gerard Way, and in fact My Chemical Romance as a whole, are rebels. Photos Influences and Discogrohpy Gerard Way, front-man for My Chemical Romance, states that performances from At the Drive-In and Thursday influenced his need for individuality. He said they were perfect in channeling the Stooges and MC5. Which seems to be his goal, in much of his music. Rock and punk were the greatest influential genres for his developing band, but you can tell there are slight pop influences in his music. He has succeeded in much with the hardcore edginess that he strove for, and his music has reached many ears. Though many parents would, frankly, be scared stiff of him, many teenagers have embraced his recklessness and abandon for society. In fact, My Chemical Romance has won plenty of awards including, My Chemical Romance being announced as best international band at the NME Awards, the annual awards by music magazine, NME, in 2007.
My Chemical Romance has come up with many great songs throughout the years, but I must say, my personal favorite is Mama, in The Black Parade! album. The unique use of violin and accordion made me feel like I was really in the story. The song tells the tale of a young man who was sent off in the army by his mother, and has died as the result. The revel-like chorus makes me feel like starting a rebellion, as I sing along to morbid lyrics.
The defining album for this band, I would suggest, would be Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge as this is one of their major works and gave them the breakthrough to the regular populous, as the freaks they are. This contains some of their most popular work, that teens are still listening to today, songs like Helena, I'm Not Okay ( I Promise), and You Know What They Do To Guys Like Us In Prison, were all instant hits. I'm Not Okay(I Promise) aired on MTV for a while and helped skyrocket MCR into the mainstream. Fun Fact: The album cover for Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge, was an animation Gerard Way made himself. Fun Fact: Fun Fact: Fun Fact: The copyright for I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love says, "© 2002 EYEBALL RECORDS/ MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE. UNAUTHORIZED DUPLICATION IS A VIOLATION OF APPLICABLE LAWS AND WILL RESULT IN GERARD COMING TO YOUR HOUSE AND SUCKING YOUR BLOOD" MCR says that the album Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge "Rose from the ashes following the tragic events of 9/11" The Black Parade has to this day sold over 1.3 million albums worldwide.
