Rachel Sickels Tolerance Why does Erin compare this drawing of an African-American student to the drawings of Jewish men during the Holocaust? Why do you think Erin refers to the Nazis as the most famous gang? Why does this comparison make the students begin to listen to her? Could Ms. Gruwell's pro-tolerance teaching methods be extended to the wntire school and beyond? How could this be achieved? What would you do to break the ethnic and racial barriers in Ms. Gruwell's classroom? Are youth respectful of each other's differences? Are there problems similar to those in Wilson High? If so, what steps can you take to initiate? Erin compares the drawings because both are meant to hurt the one their targeting, to make them feel inferior and different. The drawings were supposed to bring others to think that person, or people in the case of the jews, were different, and that they should be treated different because of it. For the Jews, the drawings were trying to make them seem evil, and that they should be feared and prosecuted so they won't bring about anymore evil. For the drawing of Sharaud, it was kids who were sick of his attitude, and decided to make fun of the one thing he can't control. The Nazis were the worst of the worst. They did terrible, unspeakable things to the Jews that makes one shudder at the though. Erin, however, refers them to a gang because that's what they basically were. The Nazis were many people following under one person. They were roped in to believing they were doing the right thing, and that they were leading their people into a new generation. This comparison made the students begin to listen to her because that's what the gangs in the town are like. Erin's pro-tolerance teaching methods could be extended to the entire school.. if the teacher's actually tried. People don't like change. They don't like to change their daily routines for something they have no interest in. If the teachers tried, like changed their books to teach about tolerance, Erin's pro-tolerance teaching methods could be spread. Encouraging the students to go and talk to one another, and help one another is another way Erin's pro-tolerance teaching methods could be spread. What I would do is I would make the kids start talking to each other and show each other that they are not as different than they seem. I would show them book they could relate to, and have team building sessions where the class had to work together to accomplish a goal together. I know from personal experience that when you work together with people, even if you do not like the person, you tend to reevaluate your view on them. Today's youth come in many different forms. There are those that are respectful of each other, and go out to help each other, there are those that just don't care, and there are those that go out of there way to hurt each other. Unfortunately, there are similar problems like Wilson High in our school, but luckily not as extreme. We have people fighting with each other, and we have people going out of there way to hurt each. But we can change that. If you see someone who is being pick on, stand up for them, even if you don't know them. Smile at someone who looks like they need it. Who know's, you might just make their day.
