The Journey Eiffel Tower The purpose of the Eiffel Tower was to stand as a entrance arch into the World Fair of 1889. Fast Fact: The tower is the tallest tower in Paris The Eiffel Tower's construction began in 1887 and was showcased for the first time on March 31. 1889. By: Rebecca Yates The Eiffel Tower stands 1,050 feet tall. About the same height as a 81-story building!!! The Eiffel Tower is named after the engineer Gustave Eiffel, (whose company built and designed the tower). Gustave Eiffel The Eiffel Tower is made of 9,441 tons of steel. In 2010 you would have found that about 18,600 people visit the tower daily. The tower took 40 tons of paint to cover it from the base to the antenna. The tower shrinks 6 inches in the winter. Solar heating can cause the Eiffel Tower to expand 3.25 inches. The Eiffel Tower's current nickname is; 'The Iron Lady'. The tower is claimed to be the most paid & visited monument in the world. The Eiffel Tower is painted every 7 years, in 3 shades of brown.
