Sigmund Freud
By: Jenny, Kali, and Peter

Though there were seven children, Freud was his mothers favorite
Sigmund was first in his class at Spurling Gymnasium
Freud and his family moved to Vienna
when he was 4 years old, he lived there until death
After graduation, he set up a private practice. He considered himself a scientist rather than a doctor, trying to understand the journey of human knowledge and experience
Freud received his doctor of medicine degree at the age of 24
Freud met Martha Bernays at the age of 26, they were separated for the majority of the 4 years preceding their marriage. Married in 1887.
Sigmund Freud's Psychoanalysis Therapy
Of their six children, Anna was her fathers most famous follower.
Theory of Id, Ego, and Super ego
The Id is entirely unconscious, and includes instinctive and primitive behaviors.
Id
Strives for instant gratification of all desires, wants, and needs.
Ego
Legacy of Sigmund Freud:
Part of personality that deals with reality.
got inside peoples heads
Treated people who struggle with depression, but not a particular disorder
patients talk the whole time, so the doctor can figure out whats wrong
The person having this treatment should posses emotional and psychological strength
Goes over painful memories of the patient
Ensures that the impulses from the Id are expressed in a way exceptable to the real world.
Left a legacy not only on the psychological community, but on the parenting techniques.
Parents became more cautious of how they treated children
Freud made a positive impact on society at large
The father of psychoanalysis
Super Ego
He refined the concepts of the unconscious, infantile sexuality, and repression
Holds all internal moral standards that we acquire from both parents and society.
Our sense of right and wrong, and guidelines for making judgements.
The father of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud is best known for his tendency to trace nearly all psychological problems back to sexual issues
Sigmund Freud's Defense Mechanisms
Repression- The first defense mechanism Freud discovered and one the most important
Conscious and Unconscious mind
Projection-individuals that express their thoughts verbally
Displacement-taking ones anger out on something or someone else
Conscious mind
Includes everything that we are aware of.
Sublimation-expressing ones emotion through arts such as a song writer
This is the aspect of our mental processing that we can think and talk about rationally.
Denial-blocking painful past experiences, denying reality
Unconscious Mind
Reservoirs of feelings, thoughts, urges, and memories that is outside of our conscious awareness.
Most of the contents of the unconscious mind are unpleasant such as pain, anxiety, and conflict.
