Transcript of Figurative Language of Dark They Were, And Golden Eyed

Summary
Earth men had just landed on Mars, and of them was the Bittering family who weren't very thrilled at first. But, then they realized that the food they were growing was changing, and then they started to change. They're skin was darker and their eyes were turning yellow. Mr. Bittering started to build a rocket to try to escape from Mars, but eventually gave in and they all became Martians.
Simile
A simile is a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind used to make a description more exciting.
"They saw the old cities, lost in their meadows, lying like delicate children's bones among the blowing lakes of grass." (pg. 480, para. 3)
"Mars, the cinnamon dust and wines airs, to be baked like gingerbread shapes in martian summers." (pg.481, para. 4)
"And the lawn in front of their house very quietly and slowly was coloring itself like spring violets." (pg.483, para.9)
Metaphors
A figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable.

"As long as the rockets had spun a silver web across space." (pg.481, para. 9)
"The nights were full of wind that blew down the empty moonlit sea meadows past the little white chess cities lying for their twelve-thousandth year in the shallows." (pg.484, para. 14)
Imagery
Imagery is when the author uses words that create a picture in the reader's head.
"The rocket metal cooled in the meadow wind. Its lid gave a bulging
pop
." (pg.479 para. 1)
"The web gone, the rocket lying in jigsaw heaps of molten girder and unsnaked wire." (pg.481 para.4)
"The man felt his hair flutter and the tissues of his body draw tight as if he were standing at the center of a vacuum." (pg.479 para. 2)
