*Infants seek and interpret other’s focus of attention and corresponding emotional perspective because they appreciate that people have emotions, intentions, and perspectives that differ from their own Arguments for joint attention being innate: Arguments that joint attention is a learned behavior: Social referencing: a process of emotional communication in which one’s perception of other persons’ interpretations of events is used to form one’s own understanding of that event (Feinman, 1982) Argument that Joint attention is due to Attachment:
* Number of occasions in which looking at the parent preceded
touching the stimulus toy was significantly higher in older infants.
* When looking, older infants preferred looking at parent’s face.
* Older infants looked at parents longer when with fearful emotion, whereas younger kids looked at parents longer when with positive emotion.
* Number of occasions when infants reaching for the toys had not much difference whether it was a positive emotion or negative emotion. *Infants simply learn through reinforcement (operant conditioning )
*Movement of the gazer’s head draws the infants’ attention to a section of space. This does not require Theory of Mind
