Moldova Fun and intresting facts :) The official name of Moldova is ‘Republic of Moldova’. The official language of Moldova is Moldovan. However, Ukrainian, Russian and Gagauz are also widely spoken there. Historical facts In 1940, the Soviet Union occupied Bessarabia. Later, it was split between the Ukrainian SSR and the newly-created Moldavian SSR. Moldova gained independence from the USSR on 27th August 1991. In 2001, Moldova became the first former Soviet state to elect a Communist as its president. Gagauz became an autonomous region of Moldova in 1994. Economy Exports $1,361,000,000.00 Moldova remains one of the poorest countries in Europe despite recent progress from its small economic base Government Gov type, republic Capital Chisinau Religion Most of Moldova's population are Orthodox Christians. In 1991, about 98.5 percent of the population belonged to this faith. In addition followers of the Old Rite Russian Orthodox Church (Old Believers) make up approximately 3.6 percent of the population Entertainment In Chisinau, there is a good selection of theatres and concert halls, and an opera house. All performances in the Chekhov Drama Theatre are exclusively in Russian music The country is famous for its tradition of folk arts and there are many lively musical groups Moldovan music is closely related to that of its neighbour and cultural kin, Romania. Moldovan folk is known for swift, complex rhythms Food the local specialties that include small grilled sausages with onion and pepper (mititeyi) and mamaliga, a thick, sticky maize pie served with brinza. The ingredients mainly used in the traditional meals include a variety of vegetables like green peppers, aubergines, tomatoes, white cabbage, onions, garlic and beans. Clothing The female's traditional garment consists of a white embroidered blouse, an embroidered vest trimmed with sheep fleece, and a white skirt with lace on the hem, usually covered by a black embroidered overskirt. The male costume consists of a white embroidered shirt, a vest similar to the women's, white pants, a hat decorated with peacock feathers or flowers, or a sheep fleece cap, and a wide belt.
