Thank You!
Main Idea #1: Earth is home to an incredible diversity of life
1.1: The Study of Life
Key Concept:
Biology
is the study of all forms of life
Learning Objectives
1. Define Key Terms:
biology, biosphere, biodiversity, species, organism, cell, metabolism, DNA
.
2. Summarize the characteristics that all living things share
Biosphere:
All living things and all the places they are found on Earth
The
biosphere
includes many environments:
Biodiversity:
the variety of life across the biosphere
Every part of the
biosphere
is connected, however distantly with every other part.
-land environments
-salt and freshwater environments
Generally increases close to the equator (warmer areas)
Species:
a group of living organisms consisting of similar individuals capable of interbreeding.
1. What is a
species
?

2. Describe
biodiversity
in terms of species.
Organism:
An individual living thing
Characteristics of All Living Things
All Organisms are Made Up of One or More Cells
All Organisms Need Energy for Maintenance and Growth
All Organisms Must Respond to Their Environment
Organisms Must Be Able to Reproduce
-Pass their genetic material to their offspring
-DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid):
a molecule that stores genetic information in all organisms
Main Idea #2: All organisms share certain characteristics
Cell:
the most basic unit of life
Multicellular organisms have specialized cells
Single-celled organisms (most common forms of life)
Metabolism:
all of the chemical processes that build up or breakdown materials
1.
2. Compare how single-celled and multicellular organisms reproduce?
