September 4,1999 On this day many things
had happened on the news. 30 Celsius in the GTA
A hot day in Autumn.
Saturday 401 Accident There was a major crash on the 401 on September 3, 1999. The local weather station reported clear conditions due to a malfunction, while a thick layer of fog rolled onto the highway. Dozens of vehicles including a few semi-trailers quickly crashed into each other shortly after 8 am, one following another in the fog, and the accumulating wreckage caught traffic traveling in the opposite direction. Immediately following the accident, the Ministry of Transportation Ontario installed paved shoulders with rumble strips and funded additional police to patrol the highway, a move criticized as being insufficient. It's nickname was Carnage Alley. Even though it had happened the day prior, it was on the news on September 4. Russian Apartment Bombing The Russian apartment bombings were a series of explosions that hit four apartment blocks in the Russian cities of Buynaksk, Moscow, and Volgodonsk in September 1999, killing 293 people and injuring 651. The explosions occurred in Buynaksk on 4 September. Together with the Invasion of Dagestan launched from Chechnya in August 1999 by Islamist militia led by Shamil Basayev and Ibn al-Khattab, the bombings caused the Russian Federation to launch the Second Chechen War. An official investigation of the bombings was completed by the Russian Federal Security Service in 2002. According to the investigation and the court ruling that followed, the bombings were organized by Achemez Gochiyaev, who remained at large as of 2010, and ordered by Ibn Al-Khattab and Abu Omar al-Saif, who were later killed. Six other suspects have been convicted by Russian courts. An independent public commission to investigate the bombings was chaired by Duma deputy Sergei Kovalev. The commission was rendered ineffective because of government refusal to respond to its inquiries. Top Songs On the top of the charts of the week, it's Unpretty by TLC. At the second place, it's Music of my heart by N-SYNC and Gloria Estefan. The third but not least, it's Larger Than Life by Backstreet Boys.
