Star Wars; The Phantom Menace
Transcript of Star Wars; The Phantom Menace
In a Galaxy, far, far away,
are the worlds of Terry Brooks' space novel Star Wars, the Phantom Menace, based off of the screenplay by George Lucas.
Star Wars, the Phantom Menace is a brilliant beginning to the the six part Star Wars saga (that I am still to read).
The Phantom Menace
Book by Terry Brooks Project by Scott Ota
The book follows several different characters that weave their stories into one another to create a single epic novel, and explores several unique lands in different planets.
The main story revolves around two men who are trained in the arts of the Jedi, the protectors of the galaxy that wield weapons called lightsabers, and a young boy who lives as a slave on a foreign desert planet.
On the desert planes of Tatooine,a planet under the radar of any government, was a young slave boy with big dreams of freeing himself and his mother and traveling to other worlds
as a Jedi, his extraordinary powers to know the "rightness" of things, and his incredible instincts and reactions. His name was Anakin Skywalker.
His reactions are so quick, he has learned to race a pod racer, an extremely dangerous
machine that can reach up to 850 miles perhour, only legal to drive in certain parts of the galaxy.
The Jedi are the protectors of the galaxy, who study and practice the arts of the Force in temples across the galaxy, the largest one on a planet-city called Coruscant. At the time, there were only about 200 Jedi. The force is a strange and mystical power. The two Jedi that the story follows are two humans named Qui-Gon-Jin, and his apprentice Obi-Wan-Kenobi (it must have been a trend to have really long names).
They were given the task to be representatives for the Jedi's government, the Republic, in a negotiation council with the Trade Federation, a neighboring network to the Republic.
On boarding the space cruiser to the council, the Jedi were ambushed by the Trade Federation droid Army, and were forced to escape on a hijacked transport ship.
Realizing they have been betrayed by the Trade Federation and its leader, Nute Gunray, they were forced to land their hijacked ship on the world of Naboo, one of the many capitols of the galaxy, which happened to be home to the young queen Amidala, whom the Trade federation was searching for.
The Jedi landed on Naboo, a planet with enormous plains and swamps that are home to the strange alien race of Gungans, and home to a large empire, ruled by a young queen named Padme Amidala.
They arrive just to find a war zone blanketed with Trade Federation droid soldiers that they must evade. Along the way the Jedi meet a clumsy and naive alien named Jar Jar Binks, a Gungan. They use Jar Jar to get into the Gungan kingdom, Otoh Gunga, to find that Jar Jar was once banished from the kingdom.
The Jedi escaped from the Gungans in an emergency submarine, and emerged in a swamp near the kingdom. They then rescued the Queen Amidala from the raided kingdom, along with some of her bodyguards, along with Jar Jar Binks.
They are attacked and are saved by a little droid called R2-D2. With R2-D2's help, they successfully land their ship on a planet that is not tracked by the Trade Federation. This planet is the desert planet Tatooine.
On Tatooine, the Jedi's ship is ruined, and they must find a new part to fix it, that is particularly expensive and valuable. The first shop they turn to is surprisingly the first one they find, Watto's shop, where young Anakin works as a slave. At the same time, Anakin falls in love with the young Queen.
Anakin is also entering in a Podrace at the same time, so Qui-Gon-Jin convinces Watto into giving them the piece if Anakin wins the race, although he has never won before.
Anakin wins the race for the Jedi with help from the Jedi's force, and Qui-Gon admits he has found interest in the boy, so he gets him out of slavery and decides to train him into a Jedi.
As they prepare to leave Tatooine, they are ambushed by a disguised Sith, who was able to
stalk them using probe
droids, small floating
mechanics, that recorded
their every move. The Jedi
protected the Queen and
other passengers, almost
losing Qui-Gon, and flew
off in there ship.
Along with the Jedi and the light force, there is also a dark side of the force, rouge Jedi that call themselves
Siths. They are naturally the enemies of the Jedi, ever expanding and evil, they once went to war, but were banished and thrown out of the galaxy.
They were thought to be extinct, but there are still some practicing the dark arts. The Siths were lead by well a experienced
Sith, called Darth Sidious and his apprentice Darth Maul, a demonic appearing alien.
They safely navigate through space and reach the planet-city Coruscant. After reaching Coruscant, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan request to train Anakin into a Jedi.
Also as they land, Queen Amidala must attend a council, in which she intends to ask the Republic and Jedi for assistance in defending her planet, but as she talks with Jar Jar, Jar Jar accidentally tells her the Gungans have an army on Naboo.
Knowing this, the queen requests a cruiser back to her homeland, thinking she can find peace with the Gungans.
return to Naboo
The queen's ship reached Naboo safely, and the party enters the battlefield outside Otoh Gunga. The Queen tells the Naboo chief they ask for help, and drops to one knee in respect. Seeing the new found respect and reliance upon the Gungans, Boss Nass excepts the plead.
The Gungan army was to serve as a decoy to the Trade Federation Army, while the Jedi, the Queen, Amidala's chief body guard Panaka, and Anakin ambush the palace and capture Nute Gunray. The Jedi successfully maneuver through the palace walls undetected.
Once the Jedi, Queen, Panaka, and Anakin are in the palace, they are ambushed by the demonic appearing Sith with a duel lightsaber in the Naboo palace hangar. The
Queen and Panaka escape
the hangar, and Anakin
accidentally traps himself
in a plane heading to the
droid command center.
The Queen and Panaka
capture Nute Gunray, and the Jedi continue battling the demonic Sith
Anakin flies through space and, being incredibly good with maneuvering vehicles from his training with podracers, somehow destroys the small control station, that controls of the droids in the battle below.
The Jedi fiercely battle the Sith lord, and eventually throw the Sith into an engine room. With a lucky strike, the Sith stabs Qui-Gon-Jin, ending his life. Raged, Obi-Wan kills the Sith to avenge his master. Qui-Gon's last words to Obi-Wan was a plead to him, to ask him to train Anakin.
After the war is over, there was a great celebration for the end of the attack, the knowledge of the Siths, and a memorial for Qui-Gon-Jin.
In this book, the Star Wars saga finds three protagonists, Obi-Won Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and Qui-Gon Jin, although Qui-Gon meets an unfortunate death.
The next book in the series, Star Wars; The Clone Wars, tells the story of Anakin grown up, and under the teachings of Obi-Won
I very much enjoyed this book, and it turned me to the rest of the Star Wars series. I would recommend this book to anyone searching for good fiction, and to anyone wanting to read in a series.
