Past Simple and Past Continuous. Structure, Uses and Contrast.
Past Simple. Structure.
Past Continuous
Contrast

When we have 2 verbs and we have to choose between past simple and past
continuous we have to take into account different cases.

1. the actions happen one after the other.
in this case both are in past simple.
ex: Mary closed the door and looked for her car.
2. Both actions happen at the same time.
2.1. Both actions are long. In this case they are in past continuous.
ex: I was reading the newspaper while you were listening to the radio.
2.2. One short action interrupts a longer one. In this case the short action
which interrupts is in past simple whereas the longer one is in past continuous.
ex: I was having a bath when Paul phoned me.
