3 Major Components of Language By: Arianna Woodley, Becky Toms, and Mark Shusterman Sound System, Vocabulary, System of Grammar Sound System Phonology is the first of the three basic language components. It has to do with the sound system of a language. Every language has its own unique sound system There are two ways of approaching phonetics. One approach studies the physiological mechanisms of speech production. This is known as articulatory phonetics. The other, known as acoustic phonetics, is concerned with measuring and analyzing the physical properties of the sound waves we produce when we speak. Although all languages rely on only a handful of phonemes, no two languages use exactly the same set. "Components of Language." Oxford University Press - homepage. N.p., n.d. is into two major classes, vowels and consonants. "Phonetics: The Sounds of Language." The Sound of Languages. N.p., n.d. Vocabulary skills in the early elementary school years are strong predictors of later reading achievement and there is a correlation between vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension. Study after study over the past hundred years has tied vocabulary size to higher socioeconomic status, greater educational achievement and a host of other goods. Of all the benefits, real or imaginary, of a robust vocabulary, perhaps the most appealing is that vocabulary is heritable. SHEA, AMMON. "On Language - Vocabulary Size - NYTimes.com." System of Grammar The third of the three basic language components is grammar. This refers to the way words are structured and/or used to form what are commonly called "sentences." In English, for example, standard grammatical usage requires differences as exemplified in:
I put – he/she puts
I speak – he/she speaks
I want – he/she wants "LANGUAGE COMPONENTS." Page 1. N.p., n.d. Web. 10 Sept. 2012. <http://www.learn-a-second-language.com/LANGUAGE_COMPONENT Linguistic study involves a search for patterns in the way speakers use language; linguists aim to describe these patterns by reducing them to a set of rules called a grammar. As Edward Sapir once commented, however, "All grammars leak" (1921, 38). Over time linguists came to recognize a growing number of language components; each new component was an attempt to plug the "leaks" in an earlier grammar, to explain what had previously resisted explanation. 3."Components of Language." English grammar is the body of rules that describe the structure of expressions in the English language. This includes the structure of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences. 1.Csuhaj-Varjú, Erzsébet. "Grammar Systems - A Language-Theoretic Approach to Distribution and Cooperation." Justifying Our Idea We use vocabulary everyday when we speak because they are the words of our language. We use sound systems everyday in language when we listen to people talk. Grammar is the rules we use when we write, speak, and read. "Dat 'oman ain't so awfully pretty no how when yuh take de second look at her. Ah had to sorta pass by de house on de way back and seen her good. 'Taint nothin'to her ceptin' dat long hair" (Hurston 38). Their Eyes Were Watching God The vocabulary and grammar they used in Their Eyes Were Watching God is different from the way we speak. Support of Idea Speakers of the same language may sound different because of how their phonetics are. This produces accents. Syntax contains the rules that dictate the acceptable sequence, combination and function of words in a sentence. "Praxis Exam SLP Speech Language Pathology: Components of Language." The knowledge of words and grammar allows the creation of properly organised groups of words which can provide very useful information to the receiver. "Elements of Language."
