Impacts of tourism, the advantages and disadvantages. Benidorm, Spain Benidorm Tourism Today it stands out for its hotel
industry, beaches and skyscrapers,
built as a result of its tourist-oriented economy. Climate Before the tourist hype Benidorm was a small fishing village, with a relatively small population - whose main income was obtained through fishing the local coast, the Costa del Sol - but quickly became Spain's biggest holiday resort for people from foreign countries, and at its peak, it was attracting four million tourists each year.

Between 1930 and 1970 it became
one of the most visited tourist
destinations. Before the holiday resort... One reason it became so popular is the fact that it is only a 2-3 hour flight from most places in Europe and its cheap and affordable for most families.

For the majority of the local people, tourism is their income in one way or another, with 85% of income being from tourism. Benidorm is the most affluent area of Spain due to tourism. There is loads of work for the local people and most are flexible due to their nature. There is also a sense of globalisation as people get to get a taste of a different culture for example eating in foreign food restaurants. Reasons? Benidorm is popular with tourists from the UK, Ireland, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. Benidorm's initial growth in popularity can be attributed to the package holiday explosion, and continues year round, due to the night-life based around the central concentration of bars and clubs Benidorm, one of the most popular resorts on the world-famous Costa Blanca, can be found along the south-eastern coast of Spain. Benidorm has a special micro-climate all year round thanks to the mountains which surround the town. It enjoys some 3,400 hours of sunshine a year and an average annual temperature on the coast of 18°C (15°C in winter and 26°C in summer). Between December and March the temperature of the sea water is around 15°C Languages Spanish is the third most widely spoken language in the world, after Chinese and English. Although Spanish is the main language in Benidorm, English, French and German are generally understood at most attractions, museums, restaurants and bars where tourists are catered for The national religion of Benidorm and throughout Spain is Roman Catholic, although many other faiths and major religions are also represented in Benidorm Religons Overcrowding in Benidorm Currency -Euros Benidorm is the 3rd highest tourist destination in Europe There is however some major negative impacts of tourism in Benidorm, for example it is ovecrowded, the population has increased from 700,000 to 110,000,00. A lot of the negative impacts effect the local environment such as hardly any of the beach is natural and is constantly having to be replenished due to erosion mainly due to humans. There is also too much rubbish to deal with and roads are congestion due to too many cars and too little busses. Local people who are not that wealthy also struggle to find houses as house prices have increased due to the high demand for second homes. The negative effects, as important as the positives, is the rising of the consume of ground, water, energy, destruction of landscapes with the creations of news infrastructures, the raise in the production of disposals, the alteration of ecosystems, the introduction of exotic species of animals and plants, the lost of traditional habits, the raise of the narcotic traffic, more forest fires and the raise of the prices of the houses. In the positives is the creation of employment the increase in the economic levels the positive effect for the new inversions in the conservation of natural spaces, avoids the migration of the local population, and improves the economic and socio- cultural level of the local population. The commercialisation of the locals products, interchange of ideas, costumes and the sesibilization of the tourist and local population for protection of the environment. The tourism has positive effects, but also negatives. In my opinion . . . In my opinion, I think that tourism is a bad thing for Benidorm. Before it became a highly populated tourist attraction,it was a nice, peaceful village, with a relatively small population - whose main income was obtained through fishing the local coast but then it quickly became Spain's biggest holiday resort for people from foreign countries, and at its peak, it was attracting four million tourists each year. At first this was a good thing for Benidorm but after a few years it was becoming a bad thing. The beauty of the country was being ruined and the population was becoming too high, too high that the villagers who lived there couldn't afford to live there. There has also been a raise in the production of disposals, more people means more products, which means more rubbish. Overall I think that tourism is a disadvantage for Benidorm, tourism is ruining the reason they go there, most tourists go there because Benidorm is an attractive island with nice weather and nice beaches but they're ruining this, the more tourists that go to Benidorm, the more it will get ruined. ----------KEY----------
