Life of Pi presentation
Transcript of Life of Pi presentation
Piscine Molitor Patel
Religion vs science
Survival at any cost
The Tsimtsum sank
The only survivors?
Why should YOU read this book?
The beautiful language
“Life is so beautiful that death has fallen in love with it, a jealous, possessive love that grabs at what it can. But life leaps over oblivion lightly, losing only a thing or two of no importance, and gloom is but the passing shadow of a cloud...”
A philosophical, easy read
“To choose doubt as a philosophy of life is akin to choosing immobility as a means of transportation.”
Pi is a fascinating character
Raised in a zoo
in zoology and theology
Oh yeah, and he survives
227 days on a lifeboat.
Spoiler alert: you'll look at
the book in a whole new way.
India was very tumultuous in the 1970's
Prime Minister Gandhi had induced a state of emergency
Protests were interrupting everyday life in India
Gandhi's measures invade Pi's home state of Tamil Nadu
"The camel at the zoo was unfazed, but that straw broke Father's back."
After Gandhi overthrows the Tamil Nadu government, Pi's father decides to move the family to Canada.
Pi spends 227 days afloat on the Pacific Ocean
Encounters sharks, whales, flying fish, dorados, and sea turtles among other creatures
The Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean
Covers more then 30% of the earth's surface
The size of the Pacific Ocean is bigger than the total size of the landmass of all the continents together
Also the deepest ocean, with an average depth of 3,800 km
Contains over 25,000 different islands(Pi only sees one)
The Patel Family
Santosh Patel is Pi's father. He ran a large hotel in Madras, before moving to Pondicherry to found and direct the Pondicherry Zoo. He has a great understanding of his animals, and a great respect for them. He considers himself a modern, secular businessman, and so Pi's religious pursuits surprise him. He dies in the sinking of the Tsimtsum.
Ravi Patel is Pi's older brother. He is very different from Pi: popular, a talented athlete in all the right sports (he is captain of the cricket team), and a merciless teaser. He dies in the sinking of the Tsimtsum.
Gita Patel is Pi's mother, a normally calm and unruffled woman. She loves to read, like Pi, but unlike Pi takes no interest in religion. She dies in the sinking of the Tsimtsum.
So go read it!
