La isla de pascua Location La Isla de Pascua is a small island about 2,285 miles off the coast of Chile. Easter island was first settled between 700 and 1,100 A.D. by Polynesians who rafted their from nearby islands. It has a rough history full of civil war, epidemics, famines, slave raids, colonianism, and was close to deforestation. History Why it's Famous Tourist Attractions The Rapa Nui are famous for their competition to decide who will be the "Tangata manu" or Bird man. A contestant would choose a Hopu to swim to the nearby island to grab an egg for him (many died from shark attacks), the Hopu after grabbing the egg, would return it to the contestant, who would wait until he was spiritually ready, then present it to the patron. Then he would be declared, The Bird Man. Museo Antropológico Sebastián Englert Museum in the capital that goes over the hisory of the people on the island Moai The Moai are giant, stone statues that can be found all over the island
