Affirmative Sentence
I went to school yesterday.

Negative Sentence
I did not do the homework.
Conclusion
In affirmative sentences we use the verb in the simple past.
In negative and interrogative we use the auxiliary "DID" and the infinitive verb.
Questions
Did you play football?

Yes, I did. / No, I didn't.
Questions
What did you do last Saturday?

I watched T.V.
