Heroic efforts and sacrifices that parents make for their children

Laws and Norms
Catholic Moral Teaching
In Canada and the U.S, there are no laws denying a person to divorce.
you must go through a process in order to get a divorce.
It has become a normal practice among society when two people 'feel' as if they cannot live together anymore.
The Catholic Church does not permit Divorce.

The only exception to an annulment for divorce is if the marriage is threatening to you.
In The Bible it states a few times that we shouldn't divorce our spouse.
“Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate,” Mark 10:9
The Catholic faith firmly believes that two people become one flesh through marriage, joined together by God.

What is Divorce?
What is Divorce?

Divorce does not achieve a good, since it was not what God intended for us to do.
It is an evil act by separating what was originally one flesh brought together by God.

The act of Divorce is an unjustified act.
The condition that it effects is:

Divorce can effect the common good in many ways.
Morally it effects society
Putting The priority of Marriage and Family at the bottom of the Hierarchy of Goods.
It can effect children who grow up in these situations.
1. God is the author of life. Humans are in the image of God; thus, human life has profound dignity. It is sacred and deserves respect.
Divorce goes against God's original plan.

We are not dignifying or respecting the role Marriage has.

2. We cannot do something evil to obtain a good end.
Divorce can be considered selfish
If the married couple have children, they are only considering how they 'feel' rather than how it will effect the children.
The act of Divorce is not respecting human life and dignity because it breaks the bond of two people who were united in union.

Catholic Moral Teaching
What is polygamy?
Polygamy comes from the Greek word meaning, "often married." It refers to a marriage that includes more than one person.
Laws and Norms
Is Polygamy morally permissible?
Should polygamy be legalized?
Polygamy is illegal in the U.S, Canada, and many other countries around the world.
However, it is legal in countries such as Malaysia, Iraq, Egypt and much more.

Refers to the right of two partners who are of the same sex to enter legally into the civil institution of marriage.

without discrimination and, in particular,
without discrimination based on
race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion,
, age or mental or physical disability.
Which Groups Practice Polygamy?
Members of the Mormon Church no longer support, practice, and encourage polygamy.

:the condition of having more than one husband at one time

:refers to an intimate relationship between more than two people, with full knowledge and consent of all the partners

:the act of entering into a marriage with one person while still legally married to another

Marriage is the intimate union and equal partnership of a man and a woman. It is also both unitive and procreative.
Christian marriage is a symbol of and a shadowing of Christ’s relation to his church, his bride.

The predicament of a man who, desiring to convert to the Gospel, is obliged to repudiate one or more wives with whom he has shared years of conjugal life, is understandable. However polygamy is not in accord with the moral law." [Conjugal] communion is radically contradicted by polygamy; this, in fact, directly negates the plan of God which was revealed from the beginning, because it is contrary to the equal personal dignity of men and women who in matrimony give themselves with a love that is total and therefore unique and exclusive."180 The Christian who has previously lived in polygamy has a grave duty in justice to honor the obligations contracted in regard to his former wives and his children.

Adultery, divorce, polygamy, and free union are grave offenses against the dignity of marriage.
Definition of Cohabitation

Cohabitation is the act of living together and having a sexual relationship without being married to each other. It could be an alternative to marriage or a way of testing out living together before marriage.

One ought to reverence the marriage bond

Since human goods are intrinsically good, that is, ends in themselves, then one ought not to treat another human person as a means to an end.

And since man is a a rational animal who desires his own fullness of being(good), he ought to act rationally. Hence, one ought not to act purely on the basis of emotion, either on the basis of fear, aversion, hostility, or desire for sensible goods, but ought to act on the basis of reason, in pursuit of intelligible goods and in accordance with all the precepts of natural law.

Polygamy is not a moral practice.
It goes against God's plan.
The following principles apply to polygamy:

1. God is the author of life. Humans are in the image of God; thus, human life has profound dignity. It is sacred and deserves respect.

2. One must not do evil to obtain a good end.
Human life is sacred and the dignity of the human person is the foundation of a moral vision for society.

A polygamous family structure negatively affects the family’s socioeconomic status and interpersonal relationships and impairs the children’s psychological and social functioning.

Children from polygamous families reported more mental health and social difficulties as well as poorer school achievement.

Monogamy reduces the amount of rivalry among males (because there is a greater chance that everyone will get a mate), polygamy increases it and contributes to creating a society where there is less trust and less of a sense of shared common interests.
Children growing up in these types of polygamous families are presented with mixed signals about the roles of the adults and the roles of families.

Polygamy encourages adultery because it substitutes the idea of fidelity to one person and promotes the idea of intercourse with many individuals.

Legalizing polygamy would encourage the idea that women are to be treated as objects who belong to their husbands. (and vice versa)

People in polygamous "marriages" tend to have low self-esteem. They also experience jealousy and loneliness.

Laws and Norms
Cohabitation is legal almost everywhere in the world.
However, it is considered as a taboo in the Middle Eastern countries. They consider cohabitation as a “sin against God”.
Therefore, the laws in Middle Eastern countries called “family law” forbid couples from living together because they consider living together as disrupting public decency.
Despite its limited and social acceptance, cohabitating has turned into a famous trend among the younger generations.
More cohabitating couples are found living in the urban areas of such as Lebanon
There is no laws being challenged in the court
Church's teaching
Natural Law
We all have natural law engraved in us which tells us what is good and what is wrong
People who cohabit are living in a state of mortal sin and are in great spiritual danger
They are ignorant or ignore God’s plan for man and woman.
Man and woman are naturally allowed to consummate only after marriage, but this break this rule; thereby, breaking the natural law of the strong bond that should be present between a man and a woman
The act of using one another in Cohabitation goes against the natural law. One should not be used for the other persons pleasure.
They should live under God's commandment in a permanent relationship

Principle of Double Effect
Respecting human life and dignity
We are “ends in ourselves” and we are not things to be used
In a Cohabitation, the partners use each other for the fulfillment of sexual or emotional desires.
The children born into this relationship are not given the privilege of being born into the stable relationship.
They deprived of it
Could end up being raised by a single parent

Common Good
Does not focus on the common good
Lack of stable relationship in the society can cause bad effects
The non-permanency and instability of the relationship can lead to early breakups or divorces
Divorces are not a common good according to the society or the catholic Church
Broken marriages and breakups can cause emotional, financial, spiritual, and interpersonal pain and dislocation.

Human's are in the image of God; thus, human life has profound dignity
The act is selfish and only includes both partners.
They are using each other to satisfy their sexual drives or for emotional support
We cannot do something evil to obtain a good
For couples planning to get married:
Not the trial phase
Not the same as marriage
No permanency or commitment

Statistical Evidence
Scriptural Evidence
In sexual matters, many people simply do what seems right according to their own human wisdom. But the Bible repeatedly shows that what seems right to people is often wrong (Proverbs 14:12; Jeremiah 10:23).
Hebrews 13:4 - Marriage includes the right to have the sexual union only with the companion with whom we have a Scriptural marriage commitment. To have relations with anyone else is "fornication" or "adultery."
1 Corinthians 6:16-18 - Fornication is wrong because it constitutes being "one flesh" with someone other than one's lawful spouse. "One flesh" refers back to God's original marriage plan, which places the sexual union in marriage (Gen. 2:24).
Evidence from the Bible:
A child's outcome is usually
when they have the love and financial support of
both parents
According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church:
The most recent research suggests that serial cohabitators, couples with differing levels of commitment and those who use cohabitation as a test are most at risk for poor relationship quality and eventual relationship dissolution
Every act of sexual relationships is intended by God to express ones openness to life, love, and commitment. Intercourse outside of marriage does not fulfill what God intended but it gives a wrong sense of commitment that the couples do not have yet. Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that marriage requires the definite and total gift of person to each other. This cannot be acquired through a trial marriage (cohabitation).
Anecdotal Evidence
Kids of single parents
troublesome behavioral
boys will develop fatherly behavior that dictates the household
girls may run the household while the mother is working
robs their childhood
Single parents feel
guilt and tension
threat of decreased involvement
At the extreme, these parents feel they can't deal with their children anymore
Polygamy insults human dignity.

It is a practice in which people are used. Women/men are treated as objects/property.

Often, women are forced into polygamous marriages.

Children born into a polygamous lifestyle end up suffering in the long run.(Health problems i.e birth defects, mental issues, confusion)

Anecdotal Evidence

Biblical, Christ-centered instruction
A vision for the outreach and evangelism potential of such a ministry
A leadership team of current or former single parents who can minister to other single parents
A prayer team of church members
Free or low-cost activities that provide an environment for single-parent families to interact with each other and other families in the church
Strategies for welcoming single-parent families into all aspects of church life
Church's Sources
Are single parent families ultimately harmful or not?
Debate surrounding Cohabitation
Marriage is the combining of the souls of both the man and the woman and this allows them to give 100% to each other. Traditional marriages are based on two things which is consummation to have kids and to stay with each other till the end of time. Consummation is something that is very precious and strong bonds are necessary for it to be done. Cohabitation alters the meaning of marriage giving the ability for the partners to experience what it feels to be married without being married. This method is not easily accepted as it challenges the strong relationships that a man and woman are supposed to have after marriage.
Partners in a polygamous relationship tend to feel:

Children resulting from a polygamous relationship tend to feel/experience:
