The Hero's Journey:Catching Fire
#2: Call to Adventure
President Snow shakes up Katniss's life by threatening to kill everyone close to her unless she proves her love for Peeta. By this time she realizes she needs to take action or change. "I've endangered Gale and his family and my family and Peeta, too, by my carelessness...I will convince everyone in the districts that I was defying the Capitol, that I was crazy with love." "Aim higher in case you fall short.""What do you mean? How can I Aim higher?""Convince me," he says. (pg.28-29)
#5: Tests, Allies, and Enemies
President Snow denies Katniss's attempt at proving her love for Peeta then puts both of them back into the Hunger Games with other victors. "District 12 only has three existing victors to choose from. Two male. One female... I am going back into the arena." Katniss has to find a group of allies for the Hunger Games Quarter Quell. Since she is fighting former victors, she knew what to expect from each person, making choosing easier. (pg.173)
#6: The Approach
Now that Katniss has a team of allies, they prepare for the fighting. They train in various techniques and with different weapons. "When he goes off to chuck spears with Brutus and Chaff, I head over to the knot-tying station." Once the training is finished, every victor is put into the Hunger Games to fight to the death. (pg.225)
#10: Return with the Elixir
As soon as the Hunger Games arena is blown up, the Capitol goes into an outrage. The "elixir" would be the victory over the Capitol in destroying the arena. "Everything seems to erupt at once. The earth explodes into showers of dirt and plant matter. Trees burst into flames. Even the sky fills with brightly colored blossoms of light." (pg.380)
#1: The Ordinary World
In the book "Catching Fire," Katniss Everdeen's world is complicated. Her world went from a normal life of hunting and trading to unwanted interviews and fancy dresses. "By noon they will all be at my house in Victor's Village. The reporters, the camera crews, even Effie Trinket, my old escort, will have made their way to District 12 from the Capitol...If it were up to me I would try to forget the Hunger Games entirely. Never Speak of them. Pretend they were nothing but a bad dream." (pg.3-4)
#3: Meeting with the Mentor
Katniss is reintroduced to Haymitch, her mentor from the first Hunger Games she participated in. Haymitch helps Katniss and gives her advice on her problem. "I tell him everything. About the president's visits, about Gale, about how we're all going top die if I fail.""Then you can't fail," he says. (pg.43-44)
#7: The Ordeal
The team of victors is engulfed in a poisonous cloud of mist while sleeping. "A sickeningly sweet odor begins to invade my nostrils and I reach for them others, shouting for the to wake up. In the few seconds it takes to rouse them, I begin to blister." They attempt to run, but the poison causes muscle spasms. One of the victors sacrifices herself to save the rest of the team. (pg.297)
#8: The Reward
Although the reward in the book is not a physical reward, it gives the main characters an important advantage in the Hunger Games. One of Katniss's allies, Wiress, discovers an important detail about the Hunger Games arena, although it is hard for the others to understand because Wiress speaks in riddles. Her clue is "Tick tock, tick tock". She is trying to imply that the arena works like a clock. (pg.320-321)
#9: Resurrection
As soon as someone catches onto Wiress's clue, Beetee, another ally, starts working out a plan to destroy the arena. "So what I'm suggesting is that after the bolt hits...we run that wire all the way down into the saltwater, which is highly conductive." The plan is completed, but things go wrong and they have to improvise. (pg.359)
#4: Crossing the Threshold
Once Katniss decides what to do, she takes on a challenge. She figures out that to prove her love to Peeta, she must marry him. "I nod. He means there's only one future, If I want to keep those I love alive and stay alive myself. I'll have to marry Peeta." (pg.44)
