Transcript of Spiritual Discipline of Prayer

We are spiritually lazy
We aren't in awe of God
Practical helps for the discipline of prayer
The Discipline of Prayer
1 Thessalonians 5:17
Pray without ceasing.

- Proverbs 18:9 “He also that is slothful in his work is brother to him that is a great waster.”

- Proverbs 22:13 “The slothful man saith, There is a lion without, I shall be slain in the streets.”

- Proverbs 26:14 “As the door turneth upon his hinges, so doth the slothful upon his bed.”

- Proverbs 13:4 “The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.”

- Proverbs 26:16 “The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can render a reason.”
“Where our awareness of the greatness of God and the gospel is dim, our prayer lives will be small. The less we think of the nature and character of God, and the less we are reminded of what Jesus Christ did for us on the Cross, the less we want to pray.” – Donald Whitney

Selfish and self-ruining

Easily prevented from the right thing

Loves ease more than fruitfulness

Desires the right things but is empty handed

Is unteachable
1. Consider the creation of God
(Psalms 8, 19, 139)
2. Consider the outworking of His power spiritually
Confessions of an Unlikely Convert
3. Meditate on the Word
“One would think a greater knowledge of God would necessarily produce a greater awe, but this is not always the case. For Christians to truly be in awe of God, we must have a correct understanding of how small we are compared to God, and we must also respond correctly to the truth of God." - Jared Moore
Job 27:8-10

“8 For what is the hope of the hypocrite, though he hath gained, when God taketh away his soul? 9 Will God hear his cry when trouble cometh upon him? 10 Will he delight himself in the Almighty? will he always call upon God?”
We don't live in need

'Union and Communion'
"While a saint’s consistency in prayer, corporate worship, and biblical meditation are not things that make God love him more or less, such activities tend to foster the beautiful experience of communion with God. Temptations and neglect threaten the communion, but not the union."
2. Ways and Means to be reminded of our need
Recognize the distance

Engage passionate prayers in the Bible
