If I Stay
Transcript of If I Stay
by Gayle Forman
Title: If I Stay
Author: Gayle Forman
The protagonist of If I Stay is Mia, a cello-playing introvert. She feels like the outcast of her family for not being "punk rock" and not having blond hair. She is in love with Adam, a guitar player.
The antagonist of If I Stay would be Mia's realization that it's up to her if she wants to live or die. The choice is always confusing her, and makes her sad because both decisions have pros and cons.
At the beginning of the book, on a seemingly normal day, Mia's family takes a drive to visit family friends. Because of the road conditions, a truck hits their car and sends them tumbling into a ditch. Mia finds out her parents were D.O.A. and her brother has been taken to a hospital. Mia also realizes she's caught between living and dying- she can see and hear what's going on around her, as well as walk and talk, but no one can see or hear her. Throughout the story, Mia remembers important times in her life, like when her brother was born, her first cello recital, and when she met Adam. The way the story is told drifts between memories and what's happening in the hospital around Mia. The climax is when Mia realizes (thanks to something her grandfather says) that the choice if she lives or dies is up to her. The story ends with a cliffhanger (kind of), in which Mia is able to get back to her own body after seeing Adam in a crying mess, holding her body's hand. She feels a desperate need to reach out for him, and wakes up in her body.
Gayle Forman is a former journalist for Seventeen Magazine, and began her writing career there. She's written five YA novels, including Sisters in Sanity, If I Stay, Where She Went, Just One Day, and Just One Year. When she was 30, her and her husband traveled around the world, and the result was her travelogue.
The If I Stay movie comes out in August, based on the popular book. Chloe Grace Mortez will star as Mia.
I think the theme of If I Stay would be that love conquers all. It was when Mia felt truly in love with Adam that she was able to "come back to life."
The story fades in and out of the memories of Mia, and what's currently going on around her in the hospital. It's all told in first person.
