Christopher Columbus
Born in Genoa, Italy in 1451.
Sailed the Atlantic for the Spanish.
Discovered the New World in 1492
John Cabot
First European to set foot on mainland North America.
Amerigo Vespucci
Explored the coasts of the Americas for Spain and Portugal.

Explored what is now Florida
Ferdinand Magellan
Portuguese explorer.
Became the first person to

Expedition was supported by King Charles I of Spain to find a westward route to the Spice Islands.
He left in 1519 and reached the Spice Islands in 1521.
He died in the Philippines in 1521.
The Magellanic penguin is named after him.
Hernando Cortez
Famous Spanish Conquistador.
brought down the Aztec Empire.
Brought a large part of Mexico under the Spanish rule.
Died in Spain in 1547.
Francisco Pizarro
Spanish Conquistador
Helped Vasco Nunez de Balboa discover the Pacific Ocean.
Conquered the Inca Empire and founded the city of Lima.
Hernando de Soto
Spanish Conquistador.
Was second in command to Pizarro during the conquest of Peru.
Explored N. America and was the first to discover the Mississippi River.
Died of fever in Louisiana

Sailed to the New World in 1534.
Gave Canada its name.
Discovered the St. Lawrence River.
Did not have the best relationship with the Native Americans, tarnishing his reputation.

Explored Canada.
Settled the city of Quebec.
Has a lake named after him.
Henry Hudson
English Explorer.
Expedition was founded by the Dutch East India Company.
Explored different water routes in N. America.
