What is Active Minds?
-Active Minds was founded in 2001 by Alison Malmon
-Goals:
*Combat the stigma of mental illness
*Encourage students who needed help to seek it early
*Prevent future tragedies like the one that took her brother’s life.
*Today there are 453 chapters nationwide

*Stigma is a negative opinion or judgement based solely on a personal trait
*Particularly pervasive around mental health issues

*35,000 Americans every year die from suicide.
*1,100 college students die by suicide every year.
*Suicide is the 2nd cause of Death among college students.
*Men are 4 times more likely than females to die from suicide.

What factors do you think contribute to thoughts of suicide?

Contributing Factors
Any of the following risk factors means the person is more vulnerable to suicide than the average person. In general the presence of more risk factors means higher risk.
*Psychiatric and Medical Illnesses
-Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Alcohol/Drug Abuse, Schizophrenia, Multiple Sclerosis, any disorder illness
*History of:
-Previous suicide attempt(s)
-Trauma or abuse
-Family suicide

*
Recent Stress:
-Suicide of a friend, acquaintance or someone in the community
-Loss of a relationship or loved one
-Failure or humiliation
-Multiple losses (e.g. employment, divorce, dismissal from college, academic probation, and so on)
*
Access to Method
Especially guns, but also drugs, high buildings etc

COGNITIVE SIGNS
*Feeling trapped, like there's no way out
*No reason for living, no sense of purpose in life
-"What's the point of living"
-"No one cares"
-"Life is not worth it"
AFFECTIVE SIGNS
*Hopelessness
*Anger
*Anxiety, agitation
*Dramatic changes in mood

BEHAVIORAL SIGNS
*Looking for ways to kill oneself, seeking access to pills, weapons, or other means.
*Talking or writing about death, dying, or suicide
*Reckless or risky behavior without thinking
*Increased alcohol/drug use
*Withdrawing from friends, family, or society
*Unable to sleep or sleeping all the time

There is a lot of variability in the warning signs
*
There are a lot more behavioral warning signs, which should help us increase our awareness and alertness about these symptoms.

*Listen Non-Judgmentally
*Listen for invitations
- "I can't go on"
-"I just can't do this anymore"
-"I just want to fall asleep and never wake up"
-"There's no way out except ending it all"
How to HELP a Friend: Breakdown of HELP
valuate the situation, ask if suicidal
*Directly ask, "Are you thinking of killing
yourself?"
*Not all invitations = suicide
-Assume that the person is suicidal until
it is a for sure "no"
-It is good to know for sure, if there is any
question that suicide may be on the
person's mind, ASK
If the answer is "
yes
, I am suicidal" now what?
ASK if they have a suicide plan

*
When? If within the next 24 hours, do
not leave person alone

*
How? Ask them to get rid of or give you
the means (throw away pills, dissemble
gun)

*
If person is resistant, it is best to call
a crisis line, 911, or get the person to
a hospital

*
Not everyone who has thoughts of
suicide need to be hospitalized

Let them know this is important,that you
care, and that you will listen to their reasons
for feeling suicidal

problems, right now they need a listening ear

Help them make a step by step plan
Consult with a counselor
Ask your friend to identify 1-2 people they consider part of their support system
Refer students to Counseling and Psychological Services

Statistics
Suicide was the third leading cause of death for Latino Americans ages 15-24 and 4th leading cause for ages 25-34.
For African American youth (ages 10-19), the rate of male suicides was 3.4 times higher than that of females.
In 2010, 469 AI/AN died by suicide in the U.S (rate of 10.87 per 100,000) compared to the rate of 12.42 per 100,000 of the overall population.
The suicide rate for Asian Americans (6.10 per 10,000) is about half that of the national rate (11.5 per 10,000)
Statistics
At SFSU:
1.3% have attempted suicide. 7.5% have thought about it
At SFSU: LGBT:
1.3% attempted and 11% considered it.
At SFSU: Athletes:
2.4% attempted, which is double the amount attempted compared to the other groups
