Synthetic Marijuana
Friend or Foe?
Synthetic marijuana use is on the rise. It appeals to many people because it is cheaper than real marijuana. It is easily accessible & marketed by sellers as "natural" and safe. It is also advertised as giving a
"legal high" (NIH, 2014).
Synthetic Cannabinoids
Synthetic Cannabinoids are
chemicals that are sprayed on shredded plant material like oregano or basil (Sederer, 2015). It goes by many names. Some popular names are listed below.
Black Mamba
Fake Weed
Moon Rocks
Bombay Blue
Scooby Snax
Yucatan Fire
Green Giant
Synthetic Marijuana
How Is Fake Weed Like Real Weed?
2 is called fake weed because the chemicals in it act similar to the active ingredient in real marijuana: THC. These chemicals attach to the CB1 receptor on a brain cell and activates it to create a biological response.

The THC in real marijuana only binds to the CB1 receptor partially, but the chemicals in K2 bind fully, which makes it a completely different drug (Walton, 2014).
Why Is K2 Dangerous?
CB1 receptors are in almost every part of the brain. When K2 attaches to those CB1 receptors, which is 100x stronger than real marijuana and longer-lasting, the brain responds to the invasion in many negative ways (Walton, 2014).
What Can Happen If I Use K2?
K2 that attaches to the CB1 receptors in the hippocampus (behind your memory) causes seizures.
K2 that attaches to the CB1 receptors in prefrontal cortex causes psychosis.
K2 that attaches to the CB1 receptors in the brain stem causes cardiac, respiratory, and gastrointestinal problems.
When you use this drug, K2 attaches to all of these different receptors in your brain at once, which makes you at high risk of death (Walton, 2014).
Effects of K2 Usage
Fast heart rate
Raise in blood pressure
Slow blood flow to heart
Heart attack
Chest pain
Kidney damage
Brain damage
Loss of control
Lack of pain response
Pale skin
Profuse sweating
Spastic body movements
Violent behavior

It is a FELONY in the state of Indiana to deal K2, even if the chemical compositions do not exactly match the current statutory description of synthetic drugs (Zoeller, 2015).

The Indiana Attorney General's Office partners with state agencies, law enforcement, and Prosecutors to aggressively pursue any person or business involved in the sale of K2 (Zoeller, 2015).

Where Did K2 Come From?
John W. Huffman, PHD was one of the chemists who designed synthetic cannabis for medical research purposes.

Huffman said that using K2 was like playing a game of Russian roulette because of its deadly toxicity (Walton, 2014).

The drug is now produced in underground labs in China and elsewhere (Walton, 2014).

Not For Human Consumption

Dealers sell K2 so openly because it is labeled,
"Not for Human Consumption."

K2 is also labeled "
" or "
(NIDA, 2015).

Users are normally are aware of this, and often ingest the drug anyway.

Is K2 Legal?
So far, over 80 chemicals have been banned in the state of Indiana that were found in K2 packages (Zoeller, 2015).

Unfortunately, once these chemicals are bannned, dealers use a different mixture of chemicals, almost immediately, to replace the banned substances (NIDA, 2015).

As a result, K2 users have no idea what chemicals they are putting into their body, which is why the results of usage are so lethal (Walton, 2014).
