Transcript of Slavery Amendments

By: Sana Fathima Slavery Amendments The 13th Amendment * Passed on January 31, 1865

* Ratified on December 6, 1865

* The Amendment said:
" Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been dully convicted shall exist within the united states, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." The 13th Amendment cont. * In other words the Amendment abolished slavery

*President Lincoln actually thought this amendment
should follow the Emancipation Proclamation

* The president thought slavery would then definitely
be abolished

*Emancipation Proclamation freed slaves during the third year of bloody war The 14th Amendment * Passed on June 13, 1866

* Ratified on July 9, 1868

* The Amendment said:
" To all persons born or naturalized in the United States" and also “nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.” The 14th Amendment cont. * In other words this Amendment gives black
people citizenship

* Also the Amendment tried to extend the states that followed the Bill of Rights

* The attempt to protect all the black rights failed

* The attempt to add to the states that followed the Bill of Rights also failed The 15th Amendment * Passed on February 26, 1869

*Ratified February 3,1870

*The Amendment said:
" The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude." The 15th Amendment cont. * In other words the Amendment said that black men had the right to vote

*Discriminatory practices were held, to prevent blacks from voting

*Mostly Southerners held these practices

*The Voting Rights Act of 1965 stopped most of the practices Quick Summary * The 13th Amendment abolished slavery in the U.S.

* The 14th Amendment gave blacks citizenship

*The 15th Amendment gave blacks the right to vote

*At first not all amendments were taken into action but
eventually they were and finally blacks got their true freedom and rights Why were these amendments important to the civil war? * The war was mostly fought because of the North and Souths disagreement of slavery

* These amendments make it clear that the gruesome war wasn't useless, finally the slaves were free like the north believed they should be Why are these amendments important today? * If these amendments hadn't been written then we americans would probably still be owning slaves today

* Americans would not have as much freedom as we do now based on skin color and race
