What is a dorsal, hollow nerve chord?
This develops from a plate of ectoderm that rolls into a tube located in the dorsal of the notochord.
this trait is specific to chordates
FUNCTION: later develops into the brain and spinal chord
Muscular post anal tail
many organisms lose tail in embryonic development
FUNCTION: contains skeletal elements and muscles that provide propelling force that allows movement under water
digestive tube that goes from mouth to anal
FUNCTION: allow water to pass through the body without passing through the entire digestive track
similar to humans but unlike some phylum, chordates eat through ingestion, rather than absorption

Any member of the phylum chordata
characteristics include animal that at some point in their development have a:
hollow nerve chord
pharyngeal slits or clefts
muscular post anal
ALLOW GAS EXCHANGE TO BEATH UNDER WATER
Chordates can be:
allow them to eat a wide variety of food
Ingest food through the mouth and break it down in the esophagus
Food is further digested in the stomach and digestive enzymes absorb nutrients
eat only occasionally because their meals are fairly large
they do not swallow their prey it is broken down in stomach
their jaws are designed to swallow their prey whole
when rabbits eat food it travels from the mouth to the esophagus into the stomach and small intestine
nutrients are absorbed there
How Chordates Reproduce
chordate life begins with fertilization (union of sperm and egg)
In its primitive form fertilization occurs externally, in the water
some chordates lay eggs
if the parents die the babies have a better chance of living
the shell protects the baby
more eggs can be laid
babies can be taken by predators
How their major characteristics help them survive
provides support and allows for the chordates to swim
essential to their survival. Without movement through the water energy cannot be obtained from other animals or plants
fit into the food chain. Many are keystone species that are essential to the the survival of other species.
allows for the chordates to feel and have sensory recognition
This is essential to finding food and staying clear of predators. This allows them to be aware of their surrounding.
These slits also function as suspension-feeding devices
able to make the gas exchange process possible so those that have them can "breathe" underwater. This allowed the chordates to find new prey to hunt for and reduce any competition in their area
This allowed them to survive and continue to live under water
Post Anal Tail
This chordate tail contains skeletal elements and muscles that provide much of the propelling force that allows for movement in aquatic species
This has aloques for fast swimming and beating out competitive phyla using their post anal tail to speed through the water.
Importance to Humans
They ARE humans!
Chordates make up the human population
Other chordates are the main source of food for humans such as types of fish, and many animals that are hunted. Mammals are included in the chordates and are used for food resources, they live our homes as pets, and they function in our ecosystems. We have a very close interaction with chordates as they affect our everyday lives.
