Refugees would flee to Oakland. Many would stay permanently.

Dec 28:
It was reported that the Berkeley city trustees voted to completely
ban the sale of alcohol.
Oakland's population rises even faster.






Joyce Clyde Hall (b.1891)
of Nebraska and his brother began selling greeting cards In Kansas City, Mo. This was the beginning of Hallmark Cards.

William Durant (1861-1947)
, the founder of GM, was turfed out by the company’s bankers. In 1911 he joined forces with Louis Chevrolet, a Swiss-born racing driver,
to set up a brand new, competitor carmaker--that was later folded into GM.

Feb 17:
In San Francisco 3 elephants appearing at a Broadway vaudeville house went on a rampage while parading in North Beach.

Oct 1:
At midnight a strict anti-gambling law became effective in Nevada. It even
forbid the western custom of flipping a coin for the price of a drink.
Not a single act of gambling has occurred in Nevada since.

Jan 16:
Prohibition began as the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution
took effect. Alcohol was outlawed in the US with the passage of the 18th amendment.
At the time US authorities expected few violations of the new law. Over the next fourteen years, Prohibition corrupted all levels of society, swamped the judiciary, killed thousands of people, and gave rise to underworld syndicates that still exist.





The Olympics also dropped the tug-of-war event.
At least the world made one good decision that year













They hoped the name would live forever
in the people who wanted to tell their friends they
"Live in San Francisco – well, Oakland."

John Philip Sousa became the new director of US Marine Corps Band.

The first ball-point pen was patented on this day by Alonzo T. Cross.

Apr 26:
Charles Richter, seismologist, was born in Hamilton, Ohio. He developed the Richter Scale for measuring the amplitude of earthquakes. Californians are very familiar with his work.

Oct:
The Wright Brothers began active flying experiments at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Their first glider was a biplane that soared for 300 feet.

At the Olympics in Paris a Belgian sharpshooter killed 21 live pigeons. The event was abolished shortly thereafter.

The puffin was almost made extinct in Iceland about this time because of
harvesting. The puffin was hunted for its down which was exported to Denmark.

The British liner Titanic, on her maiden voyage and hailed as ‘the
unsinkable ship,’ collided with an iceberg in the North Atlantic and sunk.


Oct 14:
Theodore Roosevelt, former president and the Bull Moose Party
candidate, was shot at close range by anarchist William Schrenk while
campaigning for the presidency. He was saved by the papers in his breast
pocket and still managed to give a 90 minute address in Milwaukee after
requesting his audience to be quiet because "there is a bullet in my body."
Roosevelt was hailed as "the unsinkable candid--maybe we better not".

This lovely park was hand-crafted by the poet, and is the picture of
old west serenity. Miller likely would have even appreciated the dudes
shredding the park on mountain bikes a century later. From his poem
'Mashing through Death Cookies on a Saturday Afternoon':

My knees are also those colors,
for I biffed on a sick vert drop.

The 600-foot-long span of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge (known as Galloping Gertie) collapses after wobbling spectacularly.

It was modeled after Cannabis College in Amsterdam and was meant to

Feb 10:
South African President F.W. de Klerk announced that black activist Nelson Mandela would be released the next day after 27 years in captivity.

Apr 7:
Former national security adviser John M. Poindexter was convicted of five counts at his trial. However, an appeal later reversed the convictions.

Apr 24:
The space shuttle Discovery blasted off from Cape Canaveral, Fla., carrying the $1.5 billion Hubble Space Telescope. It cost $2 billion.
