Word Crimes
Confession is good for the soul, but more practice is good for the brain! Modern lyrics are full of word crimes. Continuing on your paper,
look
over these examples,
identify/name
the error, and
correct
the error.
Ah, she's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride
She's got a ticket to ride
But

she don't care

My baby don't care, my baby don't care
My baby don't care, my baby don't care
My baby don't care, my baby don't care

- "Ticket to Ride" [The Beatles]

Somethin', somethin' about this place
Somethin', 'bout lonely nights and my lipstick on your face
Somethin', somethin' about my cool Nebraska guy
Yeah something about, baby,

you and I
...
You and I, you, you and I
Oh, yeah, I'd rather die
Without you and I

"You and I" [Lady Gaga]
Lesson Learned?
Feeling Guilty? On your own paper, confess to four word crimes you have committed. (Some may be those identified by Weird Al, but you may wish to confess to others.)
Identify

the crime (name the error) and
write
the correction.
**Keep up with your work to submit to your English teacher; she may reward your honesty with extra credit points.

Lessons from Weird Al
I hope you know, I hope you know
That this has nothing to do with you
It's personal, myself and I
We've got some straightening out to do
And I'm gonna miss you like a child misses their blanket
But I've got to get a move on with my life
It's time to be a big girl now
And big girls don't cry

"Big Girls Don't Cry" [Fergie]
We don't need no education
We don't need no thought control
No dark sarcasm in the classroom
Teachers leave them kids alone
Hey teacher leave them kids alone
All in all it's just another brick in the wall
All in all you're just another brick in the wall

"Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2" [Pink Floyd]

I want your love and
I want your revenge
You and me could write a bad romance
(Oh-oh-oh--oh-oh!)
I want your love and
All your lover's revenge
You and me

could write a bad romance

"Bad Romance" [Lady Gaga]

Lights is blinding, girls need blinders
Or they could step out of bounds quick, the sidelines is
Lined with casualties

New York, concrete jungle where dreams are made of
There's nothin' you can't do
Now you're in New York

"Empire State of Mind" [Jay-Z and Alicia Keys]

Every little thing she does is magic
Everything she do just turns me on
Even though my life before was tragic
Now I know my love for her goes on

"Every Little Thing She Does is Magic" [The Police]
This one is for the boys with the booming system
Top down, AC with the cooling system
When he come up in the club, he be blazin' up
Got stacks on deck like he savin'

up
And he ill, he real, he might got a deal

"Super Bass" [Nicki Minaj]

Final Task
In the time remaining, try to
five more examples
in the lyrics of your favorite songs. (Maybe use your phones to research the lyrics?) Be sure that the errors you choose are edited for content as you write them down.
List
the original lyric,
underline

the error, and
correct
the error.
Now, you may count yourself as
a proud member of the
Grammar Police!
Go forth as a protector of
the English Language, and be on the
lookout for word crimes.
