Complete Withdrawal (1973)
The Vietnamese people
Ho Chi Minh lives in exile in
China for 30 years where he
begins to follow communism
They fight the "INDOCHINA WAR" against France
Soviets support the north
USA supports the French and south
Geneva Accords divide the nation in half at the 17th paralell
This war will impact three presidencies...
THE KEY EVENTS:
TONKIN GULF RESOLUTION:
grants broad power to the president
to wage war in VIETNAM.
American presence in Vietnam increases drastically
USA's MAIN GOAL:
prevent the spread of communism by
stopping the Vietcong
American soldiers struggle with
climate and terrain
identifying the enemy
knowing WHY they were there
The Vietnamese Strategy: Guerilla Warfare
keep picking away at them
didn't fight traditionally
win independence at any cost
