Relief
Main Differences
The main differences between both the intaglio and the relief is that they are basically the opposite of each other. Intaglio is when the ink is pressed into the etched lines while wiping the remaining ink off the surface. Relief printing is when the ink sits on the surface and not in the grooves. Another difference is also that the intaglio needs a printer press while the relief printing does not need the press. The similarities between the two is that they are both forms of printing and require ink, the end result looks quite similar but the technique to get the ink onto the paper is very different.

Intaglio
Intaglio printing is a process that uses an etched or engraved plate; the plate is smeared with ink and then wiped clean, the ink left in the recesses makes the print. High force compression is required to press the ink inside the grooves onto paper (or any other material).

Relief printing is the printing process of carving into surfaces such as wood or lino cut, then applying ink onto the surface of the print and pressing paper directly onto to the ink-covered, flat surface of the carved material and then resulting into a proper relief print.
Intaglio
Using a variety of relief printing tools such as the chisel or gouge,the wood or linocut is carved away to make a certain pattern or design. The ink is placed on the surface of the wood meaning the grooves carved away will have no ink on them . To complete the process you simply apply paper to the wood cut design and apply pressure to transfer the ink onto the paper. You can also experiment with the different colored inks to improve your print.
Using a sharp etching needle, the design is engraved into the plastic; where ever the plastic has been dug out is where the ink will stay. The deeper the grooves, the darker the ink will be. Crossing hatching will have a similar effect. For shading, you can rub sandpaper across the surface for a lighter effect. The surface is wiped clean so that only the ink in the grooves remains. A printing press compresses the ink onto the paper.
