Political aspects from 1912-1945.
The play 'An inspector calls' is set in 1912, but written in 1945. This is significant as there were a lot of changes happening during that time period as this was the period of the Russian revolution, two appalling world wars, the holocaust and the atom bomb.

J. B. Priestleys political views
In the 1930s Priestly became concerned with the political situation in the UK. Priestley became concerned with the social inequality in Britain. Therefore in 1942 Priestley and others set up the Common Wealth Party. The party argued for public ownership of land, greater democracy and new morality in politics. CWP later on merged with the Labour party in 1945. Priestley was also influential in the idea of welfare state which began to be put into place after the war.
He believed that further world wars could only be avoided through cooperation and mutual respect between countries, and so became active in the early movement for a United Nations. And as the nuclear arms race between West and East began in the 1950s, he helped to found CND, hoping that Britain would set an example to the world by a moral act of nuclear disarmament.
