Destroying

Avalon

By Isabella Di Fava
Plot (+ setting)

Following her mother’s change of jobs, Avalon moves from rural Western Australia, Grace Point to a coastal suburb in Perth. At her old school she was popular, academic and the captain of the hockey team, but at her new school, Avalon becomes the target of vindictive, nasty cyber bullying. Avalon is unable to confess what is happening to her, despite having supportive parents, until Marshall, a much more vulnerable friend is targeted, having tragic consequences. Leading to further misunderstandings, Avalon is convinced that Alice, one of the ‘popular girls’ is responsible. The effects on Avalon’s self-esteem are devastating, as ‘Metallica Guy’ and ‘Dragon Girl’ are particularly mean, who's identities will surprise the reader.

Themes
The themes that are conveyed in ‘Destroying Avalon’ are the consequences of bullying and belonging. The consequences of bullying that are shown is the book are depression, suicide and that it changes your whole life. This is very meaningful to the teens that read this as it lets them know what bullying is capable of. The theme of belonging states that it isn't easy to fit in but once you find a good group of friends, you feel like you belong. This was shown when Avalon felt like that with Marshall. Another theme is trust, and not to trust easily. This is evident when Sukey is revealed as Dragon Girl. It seemed like Avalon was good friends with her, but all along she was going behind her back.

Its Avalon first day at her new high school, she meets Mitch in the office and Caleb in homeroom, which she is really fond of. A girl named Alice is told to take Avalon to her class, Avalon is unsure about her as she seems a bit stuck up. Her first lessons is English, this is where she meets Sukey.

Avalon is in PE playing netball, this is where Alice gets annoyed and shows clear signs of dislike. During the game they never threw the ball to Avalon, when suddenly Julie ditches the ball at her when she wasn't watching and because of this they all get very annoyed with her.

It was English class again and Avalon was in a group with Alice. Alice came up with a smart word that Avalon presents to the class, this made everyone think that she doesn't fit in because she's too smart. Avalon says, ' Going to each new class was like torture' pg63

During hockey tryouts Avalon didn't go for captain as she was scared what the 'popular girls' would think. Alice says, 'maybe the competitions not tough in the country', as Avalon was the captain at her old school. This incident made Avalon worry about what the next day would bring. She didn't know it was going to be this hard to try and fit in.
This book is a narrative that is written in present tense. The author writes very descriptively, as she wants us to visualise and feel what's happening to the characters. She uses similes, personification, symbolism and metaphors. An example of a similie used is, 'Looking at it was like staring at a flattened animal on the side of the road' (pg73). An example of a metaphor is, 'My words shattered the stillness of the house. They ricocheted off the walls' (pg175).
Avalon received a message saying 'u'v got mail'. She opened it up and there's a link inside. There they are, all the online attacks, Avalon doesn't know what she's done wrong to deserve this. The most mean messages were from Dragon Girl- which she thinks is Alice and Metallica Guy. The next day at school her and her friends are verbally attacked, lucky Caleb stuck up for them, telling everyone to go away
The online attacks and cyber bullying have made Avalon obsessed, all she's doing is looking at the comments online. Suddenly Ruby unplugs her computer and Avalon takes her anger out by squeezing her arm tightly and screaming very loudly at her. making her terrified. Her parents are disappointed in her and surprised at the fact that she would do something like that.
Her mum and dad pressure her into talking about whats wrong as they have seen a big change in behavior as Avalon spends her time on the computer and doesn't spend anytime with her family. She was also very close to her little sister Ruby, but they have since drifted. Avalon didn't end up telling her parents anything as she didn't want to make it a big deal.
Avalon received a message from Marshall saying that the bully's have turned on him. This is after she was worried about him not coming to school.

At school the next day Marshall receives a verbal attack from Brett, who Tamara head butts. This then turns into an ugly brawl and teachers are brought into the situation.
Her mum and dad finally pressured her enough to make Avalon talk about whats going on. Avalon also needed to let it all out as the bully's have now turned on Marshall and she was included in a fight at school, which her parents were notified. Her parents were shocked and couldn't believe what had happened to their daughter.
Avalon finds out the Marshall is dead and is put into shock mode. She was sleeping all day, not talking to anyone and just couldn't believe that her best friend was no longer their to support her. After a few saddened days, Avalon finally finds out how he died, the answer- suicide. Anger rushed over her and she couldn't believe how he could do something like that. The funeral was the next day.
Avalon returned to school the day after Marshall's funeral, she felt much more powerful and wasn't scared of what anyone else thought. This was a big change in her outlook when coming to school. Caleb also helped her out by creating the website Marshall wanted to make that unmasked bullies.
Avalon goes to Marshall's mums house and discovers new things about him from his mum and his journal that the she gave her. She finds out the he was in love with her all along, which surprised her, as everyone thought he was gay. She also discovered other things such as the chain of events that happened before he killed himself.
Jeremy, Chris and Tyson were arrested for bashing Marshall on his way home the night he committed suicide. Jeremy was in more trouble, as he was responsible for cyber bullying Avalon and Marshall from his internet name, 'Metallica Guy'. Dragon Girl also exposes herself that day via the website that was created for victims to speak up and to expose bully's.
Avalon talks to Alice after she realizes that it wasn't her that did most of the cyber bullying, although she was 'A friend' that sent her a warning message before the online attacks started.
Avalon is the main character who is targeted for bullying. She is a fourteen year old girl that is intelligent- as she had been raised by two teachers. She is modest, kind hearted and friendly. When she comes to her new school, she has a desire to fit in and because of this reason she drops her own learning standers and becomes a different person from the bullying.
Sukey was one of the first friends that Avalon made. She is a quiet girl that has low self esteem and desires to be in the popular group. She has thin arms, pointy bones and a nose that is a bit big for her pale face. She was welcoming to Avalon at first but then surprises the reader as at some points of the story is quite rude. This is shown when she found out that Avalon is a year younger, 'She rolled her eyes in disgust and looked at me like dog poo'.

Avalon talks to Alice after she realizes that it wasn't her that did most of the cyber bullying, although she was 'A friend' that sent her a warning message before the online attacks started.
This is because when Avalon got that message, she was unsure with who sent it, so in the event that revealed that Alice was 'A Friend', it cleared it up, therefore it's linked.

The two events that are linked are when Alice and her group say mean things to Avalon, this therefore makes Avalon think that Alice is behind all the online attacks.

The events that are linked are
These are linked because on Avalon's first day and when she was being bullied, she felt sad, scared, anxious, stressed and embarrassed. However, when she came back to school after Marshall's funeral she felt powerful, strong and wasn't scared and didn't care about what anyone thought. This was a big change in the way she looked at herself and others.

These events that are linked are:

They are linked because the result of Marshall being physically attacked and the incident at school was just too much for him, therefore he committed suicide.

The events that are linked are:
These are linked because this incident of being embarrassed by the whole class brought on the frustration of not letting it out. She also realized that people thought that she was different and therefore, the target of bullying. This was one of the chain of events that caused Avalon to let it all out to her parents.

Jeremy was in more trouble, as he was responsible for cyber bullying Avalon and Marshall from his internet name, 'Metallica Guy'. Dragon Girl also exposes herself that day via the website that was created for victims to speak up and to expose bully's.
These are linked because if Avalon didn't read his journal, the website wouldn't have been created to expose the bullies. This could then go on and link to when Dragon Girl is exposed, as it's done by the website. Jeremy, Chris and Tyson also wouldn't have been arrested if Marshall's mum didn't find his journal that revealed all his secrets.
Jemima is in the group of misfits with Sukey, Marshall and Tamara. She doesn't get mentioned a lot in the book as she is very quite but is closer with Sukey. This therefore brings a question, did she know what Sukey was up to? Although this wasn't mentioned in the book, it's something to be wondering about.
Tamara is described as a fat, 'lezzo', short girl with bad skin and short, spiky hair, all of which are very derogatory words. Although most people saw her as being rude, mean and unwelcoming, she slowly warmed up to Avalon and ended up being really good friends. She was only like this because of the way people treated her, also because she was one of the weirdos and queeros.
Marshall was the only boy in the group of misfits. He has blonde hair, is well built and what Avalon thinks as handsome. Most people think he's gay, although he has never came out. He is easy to talk to and is very kind and friendly. He was a supportive friend of Avalon and helped her through the bullying.
Alice is one of the popular girls- someone that you better not mess with. She is boy crazy and wants things her way. In the book, she is portrayed as a mean person, but as it ends, we learn that Alice wasn't the bad guy after all. Avalon thought that she was the one who was the person behind the bullying, thi was because of some of the nasty things she said during school. Avalon then came to the realization that if Alice wasn't scared to be mean to her face, why would she need to hide over the internet?
Caleb has long, dirty blonde hair that is in dreadlocks, which indicates that he is a surfer dude. People think he is a slob, but he isn't in the misfit group. He is a very honest person and doesn't care what anybody else thinks of him. He was one of Avalon's really good friends as he had stuck up for her many times in the book.
