This year found some deep conversations in separate venues, and perhaps a dive too quickly for new members and the quiet lurkers, who may not have stayed. Strong voices need to be positive in their interactions to be inviting to all, even in dissension. I think we missed some quieter voices, and moved to a less open community in a venue that caters to anything and is a closed system, rather than one that focuses on community for all voices.

I agree with Susan Watson who suggests an easier first week, and then a collaborative second week to find connections with collaboration on something also quite easy -- to model how to connect and learn together-- the social and participatory values.

There is a discrepancy for me of venues: Facebook works and creates for itself first. I know there will be those who disagree and say I am naive, but the way Google thinks is for its users. The philosophies behind their inceptions are worlds apart.

I'm hoping for a more connected venue next year.

As with my colleagues in #clmooc, we are interested in engaging students, and in the connected world we live in, that means expanding the meaning of literacy to include the purposes, audience, and tools of today's communicators.

As we struggle with traditional expectations that "do to" students, we see students "doing" on their own: creating, making, collaborating - online and off.

We connect and share in #clmooc and blogs on this interest to learn how to adapt our pedagogy.

About My Blog
Students today enjoy the connectedness of social networking; it is part of their very being. My goal is to bring my instruction into that cloud to teach the content required in ways that inspire online responsibility and ethics in this new, very public world.

In addition, as I connect with other educators about the emerging issues and pedagogy of connected learning, I reflect here on those issues, pedagogy, and connections that make for a diverse dialogue about what education could be. These are my reflections.
Please remember we are all learning. Neither my words nor those of my students represent our school district, and our words belong to each of us as we strive to become better learners.

We question, we converse, we express, we suggest, we explore. We ask, “What Else?”

I am learning together with my colleagues in my professional learning neighborhood as my students are also learning together as they build their neighborhoods and practice digital citizenship.

Shared Purpose

How do we create a bridge to the digital world to connect learners in ways that allow them to be the connected citizens we need? How do we do so with education still in a traditional model of content delivery? How do we create authentic learning spaces where students are empowered to be creative and self-directed?

This is a shared purpose, although in each situation we may be different, yet we all want to bridge into today's connected literacies.

In this purpose, Julie Johnson has brought teachers of middle schoolers -- and other levels -- together to create a "CLmake" of cycles for students during the school year to investigate our inquiry.

During CLMOOC, I produced makes and reflections not only through blogging but also via Google slides to bring people together in their ideas. I've created MindMaps and Blendspace organizational pieces for our inquiry.

Here's a Six Word Collaborative Story/Poem -- for clarifying our own identities.

Openly Networked
Design Principle

We shared together, collaborated on projects, and reflected individually and in conversations. This is easy because we networked in Google Plus, through our blogs, in Google Docs, Hackpad, Thinglink, Vialogues, and more.

But it wasn't all openly networked. I am not comfortable with the policies of Facebook, having had a bad experience. I've never been let down by Google and so was delighted that this platform was chosen. I felt disappointment when our openness was overtaken by a closed one that, to me, is less organized, more commercial, and never open. In our Google Plus, links go to open shares -- whether on Google Plus or not.
Peer Supported
Learning Principle
Peer Supported Learning Principle:

We conversed in posts.
We commented on blogs.
We encouraged with positive and specific compliments.
We reflected with suggestions.
We trusted our give and take on differing ideas.
We asked questions.
We answered and asked more.
We asked for help.
We gave help.
We joined in projects.
We invited others in.
We let learners be where they were -- silent, quiet, involved, prolific.
This is the power of #clmooc.
It is supportive in every way.

Academically Oriented Learning Principle

In all of our work, we focused on academic goals -- specific writing and reading goals as well as the most important "soft" skills of listening, responding, collaborating, planning, revising, reflecting, producing -- the processes that make the demonstration of academic "hard" skills relevant and possible.
