WORLD GEO END OF YEAR REVIEW!
Location!
2 Types!
Absolute vs Relative
Absolute Location of Dallas:

32.78 degrees N, 96.8 degrees W

OR..
The United States is north of Mexico
Socialism
More Developed
Less Developed
Low Literacy Rate
Shorter Life Expectancy
More people farming
(primary sector)
than work in offices or stores
(tertiary)
High infant mortality rate
Because of the Earth's tilt the sun's rays are not
distributed equally across the whole earth...
Because of the earth's tilt, the sun's rays are generally the strongest on what line of latitude throughout the year?
The Northern Hemisphere's Summer Solstice is the Southern Hemisphere's Winter Solstice...
Cultural Hearth
Cultural Heart(h)
A place where culture originates and spreads to other places.
What two cities in AMERICUH! are cultural hearths?
Absolute = The exact degrees of Latitude/Longitude
Example:
Abilene, TX is 32'N, 99'W
Latitude:
32'N,
93'W
(N)orth = North of the Equator
(S)outh= South of the Equator
Longitude: 32'N,
93' W
(E)ast = East of the Prime Meridian
(W)est = West of the Prime Meridian

Ural Mts.
Everything to the West of the Ural Mts. is European Russia
Everything to the East of the Urals is Siberian Russia
P.S. "Imm"igrate and "Em"igrate have similar prefixes.
Immigrate= to enter into a nation
Emigrate= to exit a nation
Push factors

El Nino!!!
What are the economic effects of
El Nino??
What are the physical effects of El Nino??
Remember, 4 things cause
EROSION
:
1.) Water
2.) Wind
3.) Glaciers
4.) Drool on desks from students sleeping in class...
But I ain't trippin' though...
WINDWARD
LEEWARD
Remember...the Aswan High Dam
Positives:
-Created Lake Nasser (a huge lake) that farmers use for irrigation

Negatives:
-The flood water from the Nile flows into this lake, instead of onto the river banks, where it used to deposit rich sediment that naturally fertilizes the ground.

-As a result, farmers have to use expensive fertilizers.

-The aquifer (underground water table) remains unusually high because of the lake created by the dam. This causes the salt levels in the soil to increase, making the soil more acidic. Sounds good for farming, right?? Wrong!

-That huge lake attracts mosquitoes, which spread diseases like malaria.
When it's summer in the Northern Hemisphere...
it's ______ in the Southern Hemisphere.
The 4 SPHERES!!!!
And don't you dare forget about
subduction...
When the denser oceanic plate converges with
the less dense continental plate. The oceanic plate
dives below the continental, causing magma to rise up
out of a
trench
. When it cools, new crust is formed. As this happens
more and more...a
volcano
is formed!
Many islands today are volcanoes.
Highland
Yaks goin hard in the paint...
Tropical Rainforest

Tundra = Frozen area...not much grows except mosses and lichens.
It sucks living here...

Europe has been a cultural hearth for centuries upon centuries...
China has as well!
Communism:
Government is in
CONTROL
. Known as a
COMMAND ECONOMY
.
Key Words:
Command
Central/Centralized
State Planned, State Run, State Sponsored
A
communist
government has a
command
economy.
Capitalism:
Government gives
control to the people
to build up the economy.
Key Words:
Free market
Free enterprise
Market economy
Private/Privatized
= citizens own it and not government
Typically, you will find
capitalism
as the economy in
a country that chooses
democracy
as the governmental structure.
Remember...the Cold War was between
COMMUNIST RUSSIA
and

Democratic (Democracy) U.S.A.
It's called the "Cold" War because
missiles never got hot between the two nations. Both nations wanted
to see their government styles spread, and BOTH were willing to stop
the other from forcefully spreading their styles.
I don't like your SWAG,
mister!!!
Oh Yeah???
Remember, Russia is no longer
communist
.
They are now
capitalist
!
Remember...the Sahara isn't all just sand dunes. It has some rocky gravel and even mountainous areas (
like the Atlas Mts.
). The Sahara is expanding south into the Sahel...it's called desertification, fool!
OIL
is the huge natural resource!
It is SW Asia's huge
EXPORT!
Saudi Arabia (the largest country on the Arabian Peninsula) has NO RIVERS!
So how do they get fresh water??
80% of Russians live in European Russia (the smaller part). It's home
to Russia's 2 most influential cities (Moscow and St. Petersberg.) Why?
Rhymes with Zorthern Buropean Train.
Western Europe is more like America. Eastern Europe is more similar to Russia. Western Europe tends to be more developed while some parts of Eastern Europe are developing/newly industrialized (they also used to be communist when Russia was communist.)

Export
: what a nation sells to other nations.
It's always better to have a higher export number than import number for your country.
Import:
A product one country buys from another country.
This is a joke!

Existence
...
Remember, the Europeans colonized much of the world
for many centuries...a lot of cultural diffusion happened
because of this.
THE COLUMBIAN EXCHANGE
Europeans gave the Native Americans
diseases. These diseases killed huge portions
of Native American populations because their
immune systems were not used to these
diseases.
Kinda unfair, huh?
What are some push factors?
What are some pull factors?
Human-Environment Interaction
3 Gorges Dam in China...Modification or Adaptation?
Or slash and burn farming
How do people interact with the environment?
2 Types of H-E-I:
1.) Modification--we actually change the environment
2.)Adaptation--we change ourselves to adjust to the environment
Wearing a jacket: Modification or Adaptation?

Modification or Adaptation?

Push
and
Pull
Factors

Push factors
_____ people out of their homeland/region!
Pull factors
______ people to a new country/region.
Here's the deal:
Whenever we humans MODIFY the environment, we run the risk of harming it. Polluting rivers, the air, land... Destroying animal habitats (disrupting food chains, causing extinction).
In past times,
people didn't realize these negative effects
...
or
didn't really care
! Now...the
world understands we must
take care of the earth!
Often, less developed nations/societies pollute
the environment...
The
Industrial Revolution
brought a new level of...
POLLUTION!

Question:

Why does
Western Europe
have a
warmer climate
than
Canada
?
especially when they are at the same __________???
Sahara...
Sahel...
Warm ocean currents from the equator drift northward toward Europe...warm water warms the air, right? Then, WESTERLY WINDS blow
that warm air across Western Europe.
GULF STREAM
NORTH ATLANTIC DRIFT
The
monsoons are a wind system
that affect the climate and economic
activities of South Asia.

What are its effects (positive and negative?)
DESALINATION/DESALINIZATION
When you take
this...

out of
this...
What was Colonialism/Colonization?
The Europeans wanted Africa's
NATURAL RESOURCES
...
Effects of Colonization/Colonialism:
--They took many natural resources and left
--The Europeans didn't develop African nations (they sent the resources/money back to Europe.)
--Different African ethnic groups were forced to live together and work for the Europeans. When the Europeans left, these ethnic groups fought in civil wars against each other for power.
--Poverty
BUT AFRICA is not hopeless! There are many things happening in the world RIGHT NOW that are helping Africa to heal and develop and restore!!!
This is something Coach Rogers is very passionate about...ask him to tell you some crazy stories soon about Uganda and how it is being restored!
3 REGIONS:
FORMAL
,
FUNCTIONAL
,
PERCEPTUAL
Formal:
based on set facts/data/boundaries
Functional:
a region w/a specific use
Perceptual:
stereotyped regions
Formal:
Taylor County
Functional:

Perceptual:
ALL Texans are cowboys..???
You are about to watch
a quick video about the
spread and distribution
of major world religions.
S
tudy their current distribution by reading
where they currently are when the video ends.
Don't move on too quickly...

Remember, pockets of
Animism
are all around the world in rural, less developed areas, usually.
Last Video of the presentation...
If you made it through this review...then you will definitely fare better on
the EOC than she did on that video.
Thanks for all of your hard work and GOOD LUCK!
CONVECTION...
THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION
created jobs for people to work behind machines...inside of factories. More products could be made in a day, and people could make a consistent paycheck.
Societies went from people making products in their homes, to people working in factories...
When people made products in their homes, it was (and is) called
COTTAGE INDUSTRY
. Cottage is another word for home. They're just
making enough to sell a little and "get by."
When people make products in large quantities and sell them for a big profit, it's called
"COMMERCIAL INDUSTRY."
COTTAGE...
COTTAGE INDUSTRY
COMMERCIAL MANUFACTURING
We's be making products for PROFIT!

BIG MONEY! BIG MONEY! BIG MONEY!
Mo' Money, Mo' Problems!
This was Coach Rogers' JAM in '96!!!
Much of Eastern Europe was formerly communist, while Western Europe was democratic...so they were divided! TODAY, Europe has made great efforts to unite and become a stronger continent,
politically
and
economically
.

Extra, Random Stuff:
Cultural Convergence = When multiple cultures
COLLIDE
EXAMPLE:
The
silk road
in China caused
cultural convergence
, which led to
cultural diffusion!
Northern Hemisphere's Summer Solstice
is when the
direct rays of the sun

are on the
Tropic of Cancer.
Our Summer Solstice is the Southern Hemisphere's Winter Solstice...the day the Tropic of Capricorn gets the least amount of sunlight...
Why are there different climates?
Because the Earth is tilted, it gets different levels of sunlight at different places. The further you are North/South of the equator, the less sunlight.
The closer you are, the more sunlight.
So, latitude effects your climate and
so does elevation.
Also, how close you are to the
ocean...and the direction of wind currents.
World Population Growth:
Around what year did the world population jump up?
(read the graph to answer this question)
Why?
#Industrial Revolution (machines helped us farm...less starvation)
#Better Healthcare (vaccines, medicine)
#Better sanitation (cleaner water/better waste disposal)
Genocide/Ethnic Cleansing:
It's depressing to talk about
, but it's when
one group of people tries to kill off another ethnic group.
Example:
1.) The Holocaust (Hitler killed well over 6 million Jews). It is
one of the great shames of modern history.
2.) In 1994, ethnic Hutus killed about 800,000 Tutsis in Rwanda
to prevent the Tutsis from taking power.
You guys know all about Push/Pull factors...
BUT you need to know there are different types.
PUSH/PULL TYPES
Political
--war, genocide, no rights
Economic
--lack of jobs, hunger, bad living conditions
Social
--discrimination, bullying
Environmental/Physical
--Natural disasters, climate
Caste
System
Each level of the caste determines your opportunities
and how you are treated your entire life!

is when a disease begins spreading very rapidly across regions...or even from country to country!
This slide was inspired by:

"Hey, I can't talk...I'm in a huge crowd...
and I'm reviewing for the EOC!"
Dang, I just wanted to tell you real quick
that Coach Rogers go hard in the paint.
Yeah Boy!!!
If you live a good life, then you will move into the next
caste in the next life when you are "reincarnated."
But if you're a jerk your whole life,
then you get reincarnated into a lower caste.

This process of moving up and down the caste based on your behavior
in life is known as "karma" in Hindu culture...
Airplane travel has contributed to the spread
of pandemics. "Johnny American" coughs his virus
on "Ponce Frenchman"...and they both go back to their
countries. Now France is at risk from one American's sickness.
Supranationalism
When 3 or more countires form an alliance to work together. Why would they do this?

!
Talk with your partner and conclude about the following examples:
Modification
or
Adaptation
?
Critical Thinking:
In what type of nation do you think you'll find slash and burn farming?
WHY??
Why do you think this is?
BECAUSE THEY ARE ONLY CONCERNED
WITH SUBSISTING AND
DOING WHAT IT TAKES TO SURVIVE!
See the tension?...
This was Little Coach's Jam in 1991, son!
Now Coach is all grown up and married...and THIS is his jam!!!
The fact that coach can search the internet in an air-conditioned room
for youtube videos of old songs--instead of starving for his next meal says that he lives in a __________ developed nation.

The
Gold Rush
is a great example of:
--Cultural Convergence...which leads to CULTURAL DIFFUSION
-
Less Developed------Newly Industrialized------More Developed

Primary Sector
Farming/Agriculture
Mining--gems and metals
fishing
timber

Secondary
Manufacturing Sector
Industrialized
Manufacture means "to make" something
Factories making cars, furniture, planes

Tertiary
"Service Sector"
Jobs that offer a service...
salesmen/women, police, musicians, actresses/actors, internet installers, bankers, department store workers

We North Africans look more

SW Asians than than we look like
Sub-Saharan
Africans ...
That's Real Talk,
Dawg!!
Add me...
Don't get salty with me, son!
Sub-Saharan Africa is everything below the Sahara Desert
There are hundreds and hundreds of different tribes found in the Sub-Saharan Countries...
No, they don't speak "African."
"African is not a language, just like Africa is NOT A COUNTRY!
Africa is a CONTINENT with hundreds of tribes and over 2,000 spoken languages!
Know anyone who is fluent in around 3 to 6 different languages?
Many of the Sub-Saharan Africans at A-High speak many languages!
The Balkan Peninsula (in Europe) is an
incredibly diverse
region with over 10 countries...
So...there are many different ethnic groups in a small
space. Often, this can lead to __________ tensions.

that happened
right before World War 1.

The

.
The Balkan Wars
Many of these nations were in the former country called "Yugoslavia."
But remember, they are their own nations now according to ethnic groups.
Tensions still exist today.
Can you tell me why??
1. It's because the Sahara is expanding due to drought
2. Nomadic subsistence herders (traveling herders) are letting their animal herds overgraze on the Sahel. They're not giving it a break and it weakens the soil, allowing wind to blow it away!
Dubai (in the United Arab Emirates) has harvested and exported oil...using the money to boost other parts of their economy! Wow!
Dubai in 1950
Dubai today!
Most of the SW Asian (Middle East) nations are located on the
Arabian Peninsula. Which is the largest country on the Arabian Peninsula?
Even though Greenland is near North America, it belongs to Denmark, which
is in EUROPE. So Greenland is technically part of Europe.
THE GREAT RIFT VALLEY
DIVERGENT PLATES DIVIDE!!
THE GREAT RIFT VALLEY
Many people have gone to
Sub-Saharan African
countries
to do
missionary work
or
non-profit work
Here are some ways other country's citizens have helped:
1.
Medical Mission Work (medicine, doctor help, etc.)
2.
Education
3.
Digging fresh water wells
4.
Giving money
5. Fighting
corrupt leaders
that hurt others (
like The Invisible Children spreading awareness about Joseph Kony--the "Kony 2012" guy
.)
But the
problem
is more than about
money
...so the
SOLUTION
takes more than just giving
money
!
You have to change a culture; a system (perhaps politically, economically and educationally).
And to do this, you have to change peoples'
hearts
!
This next video is a great message from Ugandan's saying:
"We need more than money and sympathy...we need opportunity and a system change!"
Corruption: when leaders are not honest and make greedy decisions that affect their followers.
Corruption

Why is it called the "Plateau Continent"???

Because elevation near the coastlines is low and rises
