Point of View Theme Imagery and Diction Mood and Tone Setting Irony Genre Foreshadowing Characterization The story began in the year 2055 in a building that offers Time Safaris to any year in the past and the opportunity to shoot any animal. As the story progresses the characters travel back into the prehistoric time period and return to a changed future. The genre is science fiction because of the use the use of fictional science throughout the story. In other words, time travel. Ray Bradbury had written several pieces of literature in the science fiction genre. For example: Dark They Were and Golden Eyed and There Will Come Soft Rains. For example the following text describes the forest: "The Jungle was high and the jungle was broad and the jungle was the entire world forever and forever. Sounds like music and sounds like flying tents filled the sky, and those were pterodactyls soaring with cavernous gray wings, gigantic bats of delirium and night fever. " Imagery is descriptive language that appeals to the five senses. Ray Bradbury uses imagery throughout "A Sound of Thunder" to deeply explain the details of the world in the story. The Imagery explains the prehistoric past in which they visit during the story and the change from the original future to the changed and corrupted future. The authors choice of words or diction also helped compose the story because they are descriptive, colorful and somewhat unique. The specific words and placement of those words give "The Sound of Thunder" a poetic rhythm when describing the scenery in the story. Setting it the time and place in which the events of a story occur. Setting also includes ideas, customs, values, and beliefs of a specific time and place. Not only does the language change, but the beliefs and opinions about the results of the election change between the two futures. In the original future, the man behind the desk and Eckels mention that the Kieth, a candidate for president at the time, would make a find president and how happy they were that he won the presidential election. They also mentioned that if the other candidate Deutsher had won the their nation would have the worst kind of dictatorship.

However, later in the future, the opinion of the man behind the desk changed and he believed that candidate Kieth was a fool and a weakling and that Deutscher was an iron man; a man with guts. The candidate Deutscher won the election in the changed future. Genre is a category or type of literature; such as poetry, drama and fiction. Point of view is the perspective from which a story is told. Stories are told in 1st and 3rd person. In first person the narrator is one of the characters in the story and the refer to themselves as "I." In 3rd person there are two types Limited and Omniscient.

Omniscient: Limited; only reviews the thoughts and feelings of one character

Limited: All knowing POV, not a character in the story, overlooking "A Sound of Thunder" is in the 3rd person because there is not a character in the story that refers to his/herself as "I."
Also I think the story is 3rd person limited because the narrator is not able to see all the thoughts of all the characters; the narrator is not all knowing. Theme is the main idea or the message of the story. Often In several types of literature, theme can be expressed as a general statement about life . The theme of "A Sound of Thunder" is:
Advanced science and time travel is very dangerous; one small mistake in the past can ruin an entire future.
Fear and ignorance can lead to mistakes; especially when dealing with time travel.
Even for those who take multiple precautions to prevent error can ultimately fail because of a ignorant and fearful individual.
No one should trifle with the sequence of events, except for the people and animals that live during that time. The Protagonist is the main character of the story around whom the main conflict revolves. The Antagonist is a person or a force in society or nature that opposes the main character in a story. The Protagonist of "A Sound of Thunder" is Eckles because his goal was to shoot the T-Rex and get home safely. The Antagonist in the story is time because time is their overall and most threatening conflict. It is the year 2055 the day after presidential elections. If this is the future United States then, I assume the elections take place during the same time. In other words the story most likely took place in November. In 2055 time travel is possible and a company uses it to send people on safaris in the past. Eckels pays $10,000 to go on a safari and shoot a T-Rex. The Conflict is Man V.S. Nature or Man V.S. Self because his fear of not returning home after the Safari and his fear of the dinosaur cause him to not complete his goal. His objective was to go on a Safari and shoot the T-Rex. Short Story by: Ray Bradbury Presentation by: Mauricio Aquino Mo As the Tyrannosaurus Rex comes in to view the the jungle becomes silent and the first sound of thunder is heard. ( The sound of the T- Rex is compared to a sound of thunder) Eckles becomes very frightened and begins to talk loudly or yell in fear. The Safari guides tells Eckels to turn around, return to the time machine and hide inside. Running in fear away from the T- Rex, Eckles blindly runs to the edge of the path and steps off with out knowing. The other men killed the T-Rex and it fell dead, thus ending the sound of thunder. Eckels finds his way back to the path and is hiding in the time machine. Travis yells at Eckles for putting their lives in danger and notices that he stepped off the path because of the mud on Eckle's shoes. Eckels is forced to dig the bullets out of the T- Rex in order to be allowed to return to the future for what he did. The Safari members including Eckels return to the future but find that it greatly changed. The first changed noticed was the different spelling of words on the sign that advertised the safaris. Eckels then finds out that Deutscher instead of Keith won the presidential election the precious day. Then Eckels finds what changed time. Eckels fell back into a chair looked at the mud on his boots and finds a small gold and black butterfly that was dead. The story does on to remind the reader of how the butterfly initiated the domino effect. In the short story "A Sound of Thunder," it says that Eckles pleaded to the world, to himself, to the officials and to to the time machine to start over and make the butterfly alive again. Eckles stops talking, shuts his eyes, and waits. Travis breaths heavily then loads his rifle and shoots Eckeles. The story ends saying "There was a sound of thunder."; thus ending the story and resolving the conflict. TIME SAFARI, INC.

YU SHOOT ITT. Foreshadowing is an author's use of clues or hints to prepare readers for events that will happen later in the story. In the short story "A Sound of Thunder," there are several examples of foreshadowing. Fore example, the story mentions the winners of the presidential election which may seem irreverent considering it is a story about a time travel sarafi. However the information becomes useful later in the story. Mood: The emotional quality of literary work and a writers choice of language. Diction and rhythm can help create the mood.

Tone: An author's attitude toward his or her subject matter. Tone is conveyed through elements like word choice, punctuation, sentence structure, and figures of speech. The writer's tone cna covey attitudes such as sympathey, seriousness, irony and sadness.

Mood of the story and Tone of the author An individual in a literary work
Main characters are central to the story and fully developed
Minor Characters display few personality traits and are used to develop the story Character Characterization is the method the writer uses to reveal the personaltiy of a character.
Direct Characterization: the writer makes explicit statements about a character.
Indirect Characterization: the writer reveals a character's personality through that individual's words, thoughts and actions. Irony os a contrast or descrepany between expectatin and reality or between what is expected and what actually happens.
Situational Irony: An actual outcome of a situation is the opposite of what is expected.
Verbal Irony: A person says one thing, but means another.
Dramatic Irony: The reader knows something that the characters in the story do not. "A Sound of Thunder is a short story about a man named Eckles who lives in the year 2055. In 2055, time travels is possible and a company is in possession of a time machine which allows them to offer safaris to any point in time for $10,000. A day after the presidential election, Eckles decides to go on a safari in the past to shoot a T-Rex. When Eckles actually goes on the Safari with several others he is frightened and risks the lives of those around him, when the dinosaur comes into view. Eckles ends up running in fear and steps off a path made to prevent them from changing time. In the process he steps on a butterfly and when they return to the future everything changed. At the end of the story Travis one of the safari guides kills Eckles with his gun because of the mistake he made. Summary From what I can tell Ray Bradbury uses indirect characterization in the story "A Sound of Thunder." Instead of saying openly that Eckles is clumsy and scared about going on the safari it is proved through is words, thoughts, and actions. For example: In the story, one of the first things Eckles does is he asks if the safari guarantees that he will come back alive. Also, in the story Eckles frequently acts careless and scared. He seemed like the perfect person to cause trouble; right from the beginning of the story. There several examples of figurative language in "A Sound of Thunder." Such as this section of the text: "Out of the chars and ashes, out of dust and coals, like golden salamanders, the old years, the green years..." Figurative language also helps with imagery because the comparison of golden salamanders (a simile). Which allows the reader to imagine the picture by comparing the subject to something easier to picture in their mind. In my opinion, irony is one of the key literary elements to science fiction. Science Fiction is should keep the reader in suspense and surprise. Irony is able to tackle both of these. The part when Eckles walks off the path is an example of dramatic irony because none of the characters know that he did, even himself. None of the characters notice until the conflict with the T-Rex and the heat of the moment is over. This is a moment where the reader is screaming at the television or the book to the main
character to not do what he/she is about to do because only the reader knows what is about to happen in dramatic irony. The mood and tone seem to start off as a great adventure with suspense and amazing scenery. The rhythm and diction are amazing they are so colorful they make the story fantastic. Then later the mood and tone change to frantic and a adventure turned into a disaster. The author's tone becomes more frantic and desperate and the mood is darker. I love this about science fiction. Eckles is dynamic and and round because his perception changes throghout the story and he is a main character.

Yet characters like Billings and Kramer are more static and flat because they do not change much and are more of filler characters

All characters are important to a story but the ones that stand out the most are obivously the most significant.
