Transcript of Last Things

We believe in the bodily resurrection, ascension, authority, and high priesthood of Christ. We believe that God is not finished with the people of Israel, but will regather them to Himself according to His sovereign will. We believe in the personal and visible return of Christ and the establishment of His kingdom. We believe in the resurrection of the body, the final judgment of all mankind, and the eternal joy of the righteous and the endless suffering of the wicked.
1) The
Scriptures
teach that our
courage
in
spreading
the Gospel should be
instilled
by Christ’s
present
rule.
Last Things
• "Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
Matthew 28:18-20
• "I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which He has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints, and His incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of His mighty strength, which He exerted in Christ when He raised him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under His feet and appointed Him to be head over everything for the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills everything in every way."
Ephesians 1:18-23
2) The
Scriptures
make clear that, in the words of author Sally Lloyd Jones in her
Jesus Storybook Bible
, God’s
covenant
love is a “
Never
Stopping,
never
giving up,
always
and
forever
love”—and this
love
will breakthrough to
Israel
once more.
• "And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on Me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for Him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for Him as one grieves for a firstborn son."
Zechariah 12:10
• "They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled."
Luke 21:24
• "But if their transgression means riches for the world, and their loss means riches for the Gentiles, how much greater riches will their fullness bring! … For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?"
Romans 11:12, 15
3) We understand the
Scriptures
to teach that God
intended
both our material
nature
and our material
world
to be enjoyed in
unison
in the New
Heavens
and New
Earth
.
• "However, as it is written: 'No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love Him.'"
1 Corinthians 2:9
• "Behold, I tell you a mystery; we will not all sleep, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For this perishable must put on the imperishable, and this mortal must put on immortality. But when this perishable will have put on the imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written, 'DEATH IS SWALLOWED UP in victory.'"
1 Corinthians 15:51-54
4) With
Scripture
we affirm the
final
judgment and a
permanent
, conscious
destination
, wherein a
person’s
only hope is
Christ
—in His
death
and
resurrection
.
• "But there is nothing covered up that will not be revealed, and hidden that will not be known. Accordingly, whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in the inner rooms will be proclaimed upon the housetops."
Luke 12:2-3
• "And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire."
Revelation 20:12-15
5) Our
affirmations
concerning
The Last Things
refrain from specifying a
particular
eschatological view in order to avoid
dividing
believers for what we consider to be of
secondary
importance.
"But according to His promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by Him without spot or blemish, and at peace."
2 Peter 3:13-14
"For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies."
Romans 8:19-23 ESV
