Case Study: Adam Lanza
In December of 2012, Adam Lanza shot and killed his mother before proceeding to kill 20 students and six teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
It is known that Adam was a frequent player of violent video games such as Call of Duty, Gears of War and Combat Arms. He had 83,496 kills and 500 hours in Combat Arms.
Lanza also owned a 7 x 4 ft spreadsheet with statistics of over 450 mass murderers. It contained details like the types of weapons used by the killers.
Austrian psychologist Tobias Greitemeyer performed a study to investigate the affects of video games on aggressive behavior. He found that:
“Violent video game play may not only increase aggression on a societal level, but, as the present research suggests, it may also contribute to inter group hostility”
Positive Effects on Society
The video game industry is huge. It was worth $25.1 billion in 2008 and continues to grow every year.
The industry provides jobs and is a part of the economy.
The games that bring in the most money are violent games with a 17+ age rating. Similar to the movie industry.
A study done by the University of Padua in Italy showed that playing fast paced action games can improve the reading skills of children with dyslexia.
Dr. Daphen Maurer of McMaster University's Visual Development Lab believes that fast paced games like Call of Duty improve vision by forcing the player to see things more sharply.

Psychologists have found through research that mental health problems that lead to social isolation (Adam Lanza) can alter a person's mental state and reduce their ability to exercise cognitive control. In this state they are easily influenced by violent media like games.
