Transcript of The Tundra Biome

The Antarctic Polar Bears Ursus Maritimus The Polar Bear is one of the most famous Tundra animals. Being in the cold, fur grows all over its body including on it's paws. They are very good swimmers as shown by their diet of seals and their webbed feet. It may seem they look white but the aren't, their fur is transparent. They look white because the air spaces in their fur reflect only white. Sadly the Polar Bears' numbers are lower because of global warming. Like most bears, the Polar Bear hibernates in the winter. Two baby polar bears hiding in their "ice cave" North Canada Emperor Penguin Aptenodytes Forsteri Emperor Penguins, the biggest of the 17 penguin species, standing 3 to 4 feet tall, can weigh as much as 100 pounds. They are the only living species to reproduce during the harsh Antarctic winter. Without a nest, the male keeps the egg warm by holding it on his feet under a fold of skin for 2 months. The Emperor Penguin is also one of the most famous types of penguins, as seen in Happy Feet as the main character. They feast on marine mammals such as seals, sea lions, and even whales. They have teeth that can be up to four inches long. They are known to grab seals right off the ice. They also eat fish, squid, and seabirds. An adult Orca and it's calf Ermine Mustela erminea Orcas, or killer whales, are the largest of the dolphins and one of the world's most powerful predators. They feast on marine mammals such as seals, sea lions, and even whales, employing teeth that can be four inches (ten centimeters) long. They are known to grab seals right off the ice. They also eat fish, squid, and seabirds. The Ermine weighs up to 3-15 ounces. In the spring and summer, the Ermine's coat is chocolate brown with a white underbelly and a black tip on the tail. In the winter, the coat turns entirely white except for the black end of its tail. The Ermine is a carnivore and eats rabbits, small insects, and rodents. The leaves on this plant are used for herbal medicine. The BearBerry gets its name because many bears eat this type of berry. The berry is adapted to Arctic and Sub-Arctic climates. Bearberry is commonly found in dry, non-nutrient soils such as sand, soils on rock outcrops, and shallow soils. The End!
