What is an Archetype?
An archetype can be a:
Pattern of action
Character, theme or pattern of action?
An archetype is used as a model
Characters are are people or things with human qualities. Many characters have one of the following archetypes:
Love conquers all
good vs evil
loss of innocence
Struggle with self
Struggle with nature
Power of love
Themes are the 'big idea' behind the story.
Patterns of action are the way events normally happen in a story.
Boy meets girl
They fall in love
There is something that is not letting them be together
They overcome the problem
They live happily ever after.
So...is that it?
Hero- A good character who goes against evil to make all lives better
Heroes have many characteristics:
Raised away from home
Traumatic event leading to a journey/quest
Something happens to change the hero's life forever.
Only works for the hero
Often has help from someone or a special power
Often in danger
Different from normal people
Is successful on different tasks while on journey
A hero can have some or all of these traits
Tragic flaw or weakness
Something that makes it hard to solve problems
An evil character that is against the hero
Characteristics of a Villain
Responsible for harm, problems or damage
Sneak around to do dirty work
Does evil for personal gain (immoral)
Does not follow the rules
Mean for no reason
Has power over people
Wait...Why are we back here?
Faithful supporter of the hero/heroine
Knows the hero/heroine better than anyone
Lightens the mood
Funny or cheer up hero/heroine
Depend on hero/heroine
Often rely on hero to save them
Never leaves the hero/heroine and always believes in them
Wants to help in any way
Enjoys playing tricks on characters; sometimes is the sidekick, hero, or villian. Always loses :)
Teases and Tricks
a woman who yells at people and tells them what to do
Characteristics of a Shrew
To tell someone to do something again and again
Sometimes physically or verbally abusive
Does or says mean things
Gets angry easily
Criticizes people in a mean way
Person who is not accepted in the group
People don't accept them
Alone most of the time
Could be in the group, but does not fit in.
Angry from being hurt or misunderstood
Goes agains the rules to fix "injustices"
Influence on people
People listen to them and follow them
Work to change something
Can be good or evil
Stand up for their beliefs
Does things their way without help
Characteristics of an Individualist
Decides their own fate
Believes they can fix any situation.
Will look for adventure
Will try anything to help achieve a goal
Doesn't need any help
Helps encourage characters to become better
Earth Mother Characteristics
Connected to nature
Encourages growth and 'birth'
Gives wise advice
a character who does not yet know about 'real world' consequences
Pure and honest
do what they think is right
Want things to be happy and simple
'mother' figure to other characters
Really care about their loved ones
Want to be loved and needed
Looks after everyone
Gives too much attention
