Turn and Talk
Turn to the people at your group and talk about the questions - captains, it's your job to tell me your group's answer!

Why do people write plays?
Have you ever been to a play? What plays have you seen?
Why do people write plays?
Some people write plays to entertain others, or to give people information about an event, idea or person.


Keep this in mind, because the characters in our story have different ideas about what plays should be like.
Our Conclusions
Setting/Plot - The pictures and stage directions show that the setting is a school auditorium, so we know it takes place in a school.
The text tells us that the students are writing a play for the Founders' Day talent show, and Jasmine's scene has people living in a cabin and speaking old words - so we can conclude that it is a historical play, probably about the Founders of their town.

What other conclusions did you draw from the text?

Turn and Talk: Remember the questions from before?
Now that we've read the story, we know that Jasmine and Mitch have different ideas about what a play should be like. Do you think one of them is right? Why?
Talk to your group again - captains, pick someone new to tell us your group's answer!
Drawing Conclusions
Remember last week we talked about drawing conclusions using our background knowledge and the information in the text - today we will be practicing that with the new story.
