Life in the 1950s Science and Technology In 1956 the Interstate Highway System was started, originally created to give the military ability to move men and materials The first commercially successful electronic computer UNIVAC was built in 1951. The computers, made up of vacuum tubes, were huge, slow, and expensive. In 1958 the first passengers flew in a commercial jet plane from New York to Paris. The jets went two times faster than propeller planes. TV Shows I Love Lucy- television sitcome staring Lucille Ball, the original series ran from 1951- 1957, first show filmed in front of real people Leave it to Beaver- television sitcom about a young boy played by Jerry Mathers, ran from 1957-1963 Popular Music Elvis Presley was a popular musician and actor who was often referred to as the "King of Rock and Roll." Sung "Heartbreak Hotel." Louis Armstrong- nicknamed Satchmo or Pops, jazz trumpeter and singer from New Orleans, had a gravelly voice, made solo performances an important part of jazz music Teen Fashion Males Females greasers wore leather jackets and blue jeans with ducktail haircuts
