Transcript of If I Should Have a Daughter - Sarah Kay

--Sarah Kay "There'll be days like this...when you step out the phone booth...and the very people you wanna save are the ones standing on your cape." "It's not uncommon for people to feel like they're alone or that nobody understands them, but spoken word teaches that if you have the ability to express yourself and the courage to present those stories and opinions, you could be rewarded with a room full of your peers, or your community, who will listen. " Express yourself! Who knows what the results could be! Take a chance.
USE YOUR VOICE! "I'll always keep an extra supply of chocolate and rain boots nearby, because there is no heartbreak that chocolate can't fix. Okay, there's a few heartbreaks that chocolate can't fix, but that's what the rain boots are for, because rain will wash away everything, if you let it." Do not fear failure. In your life, you will fail plenty of times, of course, but that's when you need to stand up and say, I will not give up, and that's when you keep trying. "Because there's nothing more
beautiful than the way the ocean refuses to stop kissing the shoreline no matter how many times it's sent away." No matter what people say, you can achieve your
dreams if you never give up! Persistence is key! "Remember, good things come in threes...and so do bad things." Ever heard the phrase, everything happens for a reason? It might seem crazy...but it's true. Think about it sometime. You'll find out for every bad thing that happens, something good happens in response and visa versa. "Always apologize when you've done something wrong, but don't you ever apologize for the way your eyes refuse to stop shining. Your voice is small, but don't ever stop singing." It's never wrong to be yourself. Don't be afraid to be yourself. Never stop being yourself, even if you feel insignificant. Because you matter. "A good story has a beginning, a middle, and an end, although not necessarily in that order." Remember that an interesting story has conflict. Don't be afraid of hitting walls, embrace them. Your story is yours alone to mold as you please. "...one day I'll write a poem I can be proud to let sit in a museum exhibit as the only proof I existed." When you do something, whether it's a sport, writing poetry, painting, or whatever it is you do, make sure you can be proud of it. Do your best because as if it could be the one thing as evidence of your existence once you're gone. Change your perception! If you're having a bad day, change the way you're thinking. Always keep smiling, always keep your head up.
