Blood on the River is a book full of suspense. Each chapter leads you to the next. Samuel Collier heads off to the new world with all of his English settlers on the Susan Constant. Samuel is captain john smiths page. He realizes that the new world is not the same as he saw it in his head. Where they settle is beautiful. Yet its difficult know who's with or against them.
1.) Samuel Collier is the protagonist. His beaten by his father who was a violent drunk and abandons his family. Eventually his beloved mother dies and Samuel is left an orphan. As a result of abuse he received and the loss of his mother Samuel becomes a pretty pissed off kid.
2.) Captain Smith is a natural born leader and I predict that he will be a real father figure for Samuel. Samuel is his page. Captain Smith is a commoner he is not high born like the others.
3.) Richard Is one of the other boys who was in the orphanage with Samuel went to Jamestown with him. He and Samuel become good friends during the duration of the book. He is also Master Wingfield's page.
4.) Captain Newport is the captain of the Susan Constant.

The story takes place in Jamestown Virginia in 1607 known as the "new world"The land is occupied by the Native Americans. Three ships anchored in the Chesapeake Bay in the fall 1607. Next they loaded the longboats and went to shore.

May 13, 1607, the English Settlers landed in what is now known as Virginia.They arrived on three separate ships; The Susan Constant, The Discovery, and The Godspeed. 105 men and boys arrived in the New World. They called their settlement James Town after King James I. Their first elected president was named Ratcliffe.
