Group 3 Assessment 2a
The first ever game of basketball was played with merely nothing more than a bucket nailed to the wall that required retrieval after every score. The equipment for the modern game has changed dramatically. The equipment needed for the average basketball game is a wooden court with the dimensions 28m long x 15 m wide. A leather basketball between 75 and 78 cm in circumference, a basket hanging 3.05m above the floor attached to a 'backboard' which is a rectangular board that players may use to assist in shooting baskets.
Perhaps the most famous basketballer of all time and widely known as the greatest of all time is of NBA basketballer Michael Jordan. His record is unparalleled in the game. Playing with the Chicago Bulls and the Washington WIzards

Wakeboarding arose in the mid 1980's when Tony Finn, a surfer from San Diego created the "skurfer" - the creation that combined a water ski and a surfboard. At this early stage, there were no straps or bindings on the “skurfer”, it was simply a smaller version of a surf board that was towed at the back of a boat. In the late 1980’s, there was a major development in wakeboarding history; footstraps were drilled in the "skurfer". Which took the sport to a whole new level, allowing the surfer to get much more air, similar" to snowboarding. Within a decade, the "skurfer evolved with the assistance of Herb O’Brien who refined the design and
dynamics of the board.
Wakeboarding can start off being a costly hobbie and you will need the following:
- a wakeboard
- a life jacket
- a boat
- wakeboard line (this is attached to the boat and has a handle at the other end)
- a helmet
- binding lubricant (to assist you getting your feet into the bindings)
- open water with minimal waves ie. river or lake
Harley Clifford is an up and coming twenty year old Australian who was born in Thornlands, Queensland. Harley has been competing at a professional level when he was fourteen years of age, and has won over 25 major professional events. Harley has been named The King of Wakeboarding - two years running. He is respected in the wakeboarding community for his free-riding style and his approachable manner
Some of the most common type of wakeboarding injuries are lacerations to the upper part of the body; head, neck and arms. As the upper part of the body is seperated by the most distance to the water, when the body is thrown hard into the water, these areas become subject to hard hits of the waters' surface. Other common injuries are injuries of the ankles and knees. The reason for this, is because of the pressure put on the knees and ankles when landing the wake, and also the force that is put into these joints in order to rotate on the wake.

The game of Basketball was invented in 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts by Dr. James Naismith as a way to avoid cold winter temperatures and still keep his students active.
The game is now the second most played sport in the world, played in over 200 countries (Griffiths, 2010)
Basketball is now an Olympic sport and Professional leagues are now multi-million dollar businesses.
One of the most common injuries in the game of basketball is to the ankle. Due to the high paced nature of the game and sharp changes of directions also, standing on opponents feet can also be a cause of a 'rolled' ankle.
Other injuries that may be sustained are to the fingers of players. Catching of the ball is an important skill for basketball, deflections off opponents and the basket can cause sprains or breaks to the fingers.

Mixed Martial arts in its modern form exist as a byproduct of the Gracie family and the creation of the Ultimate Fighting Championship or UFC in 1993. Hello and Carlos Gracie created the UFC as a way of proving that Gracie Jiu-jitsu was the most effective form of martial art in a real fight situation with no rules. The original tournaments were no rules, no weight classes, the fights were bare knuckled and fought in an octagon cage. Today MMA (mixed martial arts) is regulated with rules and monitored by many different sporting commissions. is the fastest growing sport in the world and is rapidly overtaking other combat sports such as Boxing, Mauy Thai and pro wrestling as the number 1 combat sport in the world.
Modern mixed martial arts bouts are fought in an octagon cage 9.8m in diameter with chain link fence walls that are approximately 1.7m high. The fighters must use 6 ounce open fingered gloves (for grappling purposes) with at least 1 inch padding around the knuckles. A mouth guard and protective cup are also required to compete in a sanctioned bout.
Randy "The Natural" Couture is arguably the most
recognizable mixed martial artist in the world not only did Randy Couture have an amazing career as a fighter winning 2 UFC titles in 2 weight classes but has starred acting in many high budget films such as The Expendables and the scorpion king 2.Randy couture was a NCAA All American wrestler and an alternate for the American Olympic team in Roman-Greco wrestling before competing as a mixed martial artist( hunt 2008). Randy first competed in UFC 13 May 1997 as a fighter in the heavy weight tournament which he succeeded in winning by TKO in the 1st round.Randy claimed his 1st UFC belt at heavy weight by defeating champion Maurice Smith by decision December 21st 1997. Randy had an mma career that spanned 14 years finally retiring April 30 2011 after a knockout loss to Lyoto Machida (mmajunkie 2011). Randy Couture was a 4 time UFC champion twice at heavy weight and twice at light heavy weight ( the only person to have achieved this feat).
Our Group (3) decided on Sports as our topic as through communication with each other, we discoverd that all of us are very sports' orientated. We than chose a sport that we each wanted to learn more about. Our Sub-headings were chosen to make the research conducted accessible and easy to locate.
Our checklist for checking creditable online resources was created through the knowledge learnt from the Week 7 Activity.
On top of the list, was that all online resource information was to carry a 'date stamp' ensuring that the information was not only relevent but also up to date.
