How to Debate
Debate is a series of speeches made by
two sides to argue about a topic.
What is a debate?
Types of Debate
Formal
Parliamentary Debate
Informal
Conversational tone
Not too structured
Put Downs
Offensive Comments
A Screaming Match
What a Debate is NOT
Debate Do's
Be polite and courteous.
Listen attentively
Be respectful and supportive of peers.
Avoid inappropriate noises.
Speak only when recognized by the moderator.
Allow others to express their opinions; do not monopolize the debate.
Use grammatically correct language.
Speak clearly, slowly, and loud enough to be heard by the audience.
How It's Organized
Proposition: topic that is up for debate
ex: Should the driving age being lowered?
Teams
Proposition, team arguing in favor for proposition
Opposition, team arguing against proposition
Moderator
teacher or student who monitors the debate and
keeps it respectful and focused
Teams and Roles
Students will assume roles of various stakeholders in the debate.
Students will give support in favor of or against their proposition as if they are the particular stakeholder.
The Debating Process
The debate begins with an opening statement from each
team chairman that should include the team's position on the proposition and a brief overview of the supporting evidence.

Each stakeholder will present his or her point of view.
The teams will take turns making points back and forth.
The Proposition team will go first.

The debate will end with a closing statement from each team chairman restating the team's position on the proposition with strong evidence.
